Senior Underwriter Energy
Senior Underwriter Energy driven to generate and underwrite new business in the Engineering & Construction sector with a focus on Renewable Energy. Based in Madrid, reporting to Head of Energy Europe.
The opportunity
Role includes generating and underwriting new business in Southern Europe, maintaining broker/client relationships, and expanding footprint in Renewable Energy sectors such as Onshore Wind, Solar Photovoltaic, Mini Hydro and BESS.
What you’ll be doing
* Underwriting and growing the Energy & Construction book of business profitably within the risk appetite
* Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships
* Underwrite Construction projects (EAR, CAR) and Energy business ensuring appropriate analysis and documentation
* Extend and consolidate our footprint as a recognised insurance partner by assessing, proposing, and negotiating insurance conditions for large and midsize projects, predominantly Renewable Energy
* Work closely with local teams, clients and brokers
* Assess risks, coverage, terms and conditions, driving related underwriting processes, and ensuring appropriate risk management when in a lead position
* Act as a point of reference on technical issues in the region within the global Engineering and Construction community and stay updated on new technologies and market trends
* Contribute to the development of marketing strategies for the region
* Support growth of associated lines by cross‑selling capabilities and developing tailored solutions for clients’ needs
* Develop underwriting strategy, guidelines, standards, processes and tools to support this goal
* Manage referral business with underwriting authority
* Support team in managing CAT accumulation, reinsurance interaction and treaty renewal
Must‑haves
* Degree in Engineering or equivalent
* Minimum of five years engineering underwriting experience in the Renewable Energy sector
* Validated experience as a project engineer, including testing/commissioning responsibilities of large renewable projects
* Strong broker and client network
* Good understanding of natural catastrophe peril modelling and pricing for multi‑year construction policies
* Experience and strong understanding of policy forms, including broker manuscripts
* Experience marketing to specialised brokers
* Phenomenal communicator, skilled in negotiation, communications and presentation
* Strong analytical skills and high proficiency in common IT applications
* Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment, multi‑task, delegate and make quick decisions while maintaining integrity and profitability
* Effective interpersonal skills when collaborating with local and regional partners and internal colleagues across Spain and Europe
* Proficiency in Spanish and English; additional Italian or Portuguese an advantage
* Legal right to live and work in Spain
