Join to apply for the Quantum Control Engineer/Physicist – Quantum Sensing role at ARQUIMEA

ARQUIMEA, we are a technology company operating globally and providing innovate solutions and products in highly demanding sectors.

Our areas of activity are Aerospace, Defense & Security, Big Science, Biotechnology and Fintech.

ARQUIMEA Research Center (ARC), part of ARQUIMEA, was born in 2019 with the aim of inventing the technologies of tomorrow. An environment of innovation and excellence at European level from which senior and junior researchers from around the world develop disruptive technologies and business models that will serve as an engine of socio-economic growth in the medium and long term.

We are looking for a Quantum Control Engineer/Physicist – Quantum Sensing. You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing quantum control protocols for nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center–based sensing systems. This includes developing precise microwave and optical pulse sequences, coordinating timing and feedback systems, and integrating control hardware and software to enable high-fidelity spin manipulation and readout in compact, high-performance quantum sensors.

Tasks to be performed:

* Pulse Sequence Design & Optimization: Develop and implement microwave and optical pulse protocols (e.g., T1, Rabi, spin echo, dynamical decoupling) to control NV spin states with high precision.
* Feedback & Calibration Development: Build real-time feedback loops and calibration routines to maintain NV coherence, suppress noise, and stabilize sensor performance.
* Firmware & Control Software: Write and integrate control code (e.g., in Python) for timing, sequencing, and instrumentation bridging hardware (AWGs, MW generators) with experimental protocols.
* Characterization of Control Systems: Measure system performance (e.g., coherence times, fidelity, sensitivity) and refine control strategies using diagnostics and simulations and analyze experimental results to compare them against theoretical predictions and models.
* Hardware Integration: Collaborate with optical and electronics teams to ensure precise implementation of control protocols within compact NV sensor modules.
* Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with quantum physicists, optical engineers, and firmware developers to align control strategies with overall system goals and project milestones.

Required skills, experience and candidate profile:

* Master’s or PhD degree in Quantum Physics, Electrical Engineer, Applied Physics, or related field with working experience.
* Experience designing and implementing quantum control protocols (e.g., pulsed spin control, feedback systems).
* Proficiency in programming control software (Python, or equivalent).
* Skilled in designing experiments and real-time control hardware with tight timing and low-latency requirements.
* Deep understanding of quantum dynamics, including spin manipulation via microwave fields, optical pumping, and spin decoherence mechanisms, familiarity with NV centers preferred.
* Personal Skills:
o Excellent problem-solving and debugging orientation, especially in complex, multidisciplinary experimental systems.
o Strong communication and collaboration skills, and comfortable working in multidisciplinary team.
o Eagerness to learn and adapt to new experimental methods and quantum control technologies.
o Organized, detail-focused, and capable of managing control algorithms, instrumentation, and versioned software effectively.
o Self-driven, proactive, and committed to high-quality results in fast-paced R&D environments.
Additionally, we will also value experience in the following areas:

* Familiarity with quantum measurement and noise mitigation techniques (e.g., dynamical decoupling, composite pulses).
* Experience with hardware platforms such as AWGs, FPGA-based controllers, and timing synchronization systems.
* Ability to model and simulate control sequences to optimize system performance (e.g., via quantum optimal control methods).
* Strong analytical skills and documentation capability for maintaining reproducible and transparent control workflows.
