Company Description
Colegio Hispano Britanico, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain
Role Description
The position is for teaching physics from Year 9 to A Level (Year 13) in a British school.
Colegio Hispano Britanico is a small school based in Lanzarote. There are 400 children from age 3 to 18. We have two classes per year group except in sixth form where there is one class. Maximum class size is 18 students but some classes are much smaller including sixth form where there is normally 5 or 6 students per class.
Although in Spain the school follows the British curriculum and is BSO approved, so our inspections are quality assured by OFSTED. There are only around 250 BSO approved schools throughout the world and we were one of the first to receive this authorisation.
The school is very academic. Our students take 14 subjects as GCSE and some have obtained up to 18 GCSE passes. Our students have been accepted by the best universities in the world including Oxford and Cambridge. Our brightest student last year obtained 4 A* and an A in her A Levels and is now studying at Imperial College London. However the school is open entry so we have students of all abilities.
The position has a salary of around 23.027,07€ a year but also has the use of a two bedroom apartment in the old town of Puerto Del Carmen with its own roof terrace with panoramic views out to sea and of the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura. This is a 5 minute drive from school or a short bike ride. Therefore, once taxes social security and rent are deducted the teacher should have more than 1000€ a month to live on. The cost of living in Lanzarote is very reasonable and we can also provide a car at a reasonable rate which will allow the teacher greater mobility to enjoy the island.
Lanzarote is a very popular tourist destination and UNESCO world heritage site. It is volcanic in origin and has all year round good weather. In the winter the temperatures can sometimes stay in the mid 20’s during the day and in the summer the northerly trade winds keep it cooler than the south of Spain.
The salary and position is considered part time only because of the long holidays. The school is only open for 175 days a year so you have very long summer holidays and over 3 months holiday a year. The position is permanent and you are paid the 12 months of the year.
Any applicant must be able to work in Spain; so either an EU passport holder or someone with residence permit or visa. If they have not lived in Spain before we will arrange all the paperwork.
