Overview
Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal awarded in 2011. The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, improving people’s quality of life, while promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 29 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are oriented to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rare conditions. IRB Barcelona is an international centre with 500 members from 45 nationalities, located in the Barcelona Science Park. It forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya (CERCA).
Your Role & Our Team
IRB Barcelona is seeking an Officer to join our Competitive Funding and International Promotion Department, primarily supporting the Pre-Award Section. Reporting to the Section Head of Pre-Award, you will be part of a team that provides proactive support to IRB Barcelona researchers. This role is highly versatile, as you will support research teams throughout the grant application process, from identifying funding opportunities, including local, national, and international grants, to helping with proposal development and final grant agreements. A background in science can be an advantage, helping you to better understand the research in order to identify relevant funding opportunities, and to effectively communicate to funding agencies throughout the entire application and processing period. In this position, you will directly contribute to the success of cutting-edge research and help shape the future of scientific funding at a leading institution.
Key responsibilities
* Integrate within the Pre-Award Grants team to support the entire grant application and negotiation process.
* Provide comprehensive support throughout the entire grant application and negotiation process.
* Proactively identify and disseminate funding opportunities and open calls.
* Ensure compliance with eligibility criteria, budget requirements, ethical issues and other funder requirements.
* Proactively assist IRB Barcelona researchers in securing competitive funding.
* Assist in the negotiation and finalization of agreements and signatures.
* Serve as liaison between IRB Barcelona and granting agencies.
* Collaborate with the setup and management of the database for grant applications and funding opportunities.
* Contribute to the writing and submission of institutional and other projects.
You have
Knowledge and experience:
* Academic background in Life Sciences.
* Experience working with researchers on grant applications for local, national and international funding agencies.
* Familiarity with the pre-award cycle of competitive grants.
* Knowledge of budget preparation for research grants.
* Excellent command of written and spoken English and Spanish.
Skills:
* Excellent communication skills to interact with researchers, administrators, and funding agencies.
* Strong organizational and coordination abilities to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
* Familiarity with interpreting legal documents and agreements.
* Working knowledge of ERP systems (ideally SBO) and proficiency in Google Workspace and MS Office.
You might also have
* PhD in Life Sciences or related field will be valued.
* Experience in pre-award teams and cross-functional coordination.
* Experience in tracking and analyzing key indicators to assess funding trends.
* Working knowledge of Catalan and other languages will be valued.
