Dr. Enrique Barrigón, based at the Materials and Surface Laboratory of the Instituto Universitario de Materiales y Nanotecnología (IMANA) of the University of Málaga, is seeking candidates to prepare and submit a proposal for the 2025 MSCA PF call in the field of space solar cells.
About the supervisor:
My research focuses on the R&D of high-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) solar cells, both at device and material level, for innovative applications such as concentrating photovoltaics or space applications.
During my PhD at the Instituto de Energía Solar, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (IES-UPM), I developed a triple-junction PV cell based on III-V semiconductors (GaInP/GaInAs/Ge) grown by MOVPE, achieving 39.2% efficiency under concentrated light. My thesis was awarded “Outstanding Cum Laude” with international mention.
In 2015, I received a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship (MSCA-IF) for postdoctoral research at Lund University, Sweden, focusing on III-V nanowire (NW) solar cells, achieving a world record efficiency of 16.7% in NW InP solar cells and demonstrating their suitability for space applications. Since 2018, I have been a researcher at Lund University, developing characterization tools and engaging in commercialization activities, earning an innovation prize.
Since March 2022, I have been a professor at Málaga University, joining the Materials and Surfaces Laboratory. I am the IP at UMA for the EIC-Pathfinder ZEUS project, aiming to develop multijunction NW cells for space applications.
My scientific output includes 46 JCR-indexed articles, with notable publications in Progress in Photovoltaics, Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells, Nanoletters, Nano Energy, and Chemical Reviews. I have contributed to 1 book chapter, 15 conference papers, over 50 conference presentations, and received awards including the best poster at IEEE PVSC. My work has been cited over 1000 times, with an h-index of 17 (Scopus) or 20 (Google Scholar).
About the laboratory:
The Materials and Surface Laboratory has over 30 years of experience studying materials and surface functionalization for energy generation and storage. It houses tools such as magnetron sputtering systems, EQE setup, impedance spectroscopy equipment, FT-IR, UV-Vis-NIR spectrometers, fiber optic spectrometers, controlled atmosphere furnace, spray pyrolysis systems, solar simulators, vacuum oven, and advanced characterization instruments like SEM-FIB, XPS, Raman, ellipsometry, TEM, AFM, XRD, TGA, photoluminescence, and IR emissivity measurement systems.
Research topics:
The primary focus will be on developing low-cost protection methods against high-energy particle irradiation for space solar cells, including but not limited to standard space 3JSC, nanowire solar cells, or Si solar cells.
Research and career development activities include scientific stays, participation in ongoing projects, mentoring, outreach, and networking.
Preferred expertise: applied physics, space technology, solid state physics, nanotechnology.
