Position overview
For the ERC-funded research project ‘Adaptation to Climate Change in Developing Countries’, ICREA Professor Paula Bustos seeks to hire a part-time research assistant, starting in September 2025. The research assistant will perform data analysis, statistical and census data analysis, and programming (full details in section below).
Job location
Barcelona, Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Ciutadella Campus, Department of Economics and Business. The work is to be carried out on campus.
Funding body and principal investigator
EU’s Horizon Europe programme. European Research Council Consolidator grant ‘Adaptation to Climate Change in Developing Countries’, 2024–2029.
This project studies the effects of climate change on labour and capital flows in developing countries using micro-data from Brazil.
Prof. Paula Bustos (PhD Harvard) is an ICREA Research Professor at UPF and Affiliated Professor of the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE). Research Support Staff at the Department of Economics and Business, Pompeu Fabra University.
Type of contract: Open-ended, in accordance with decree RD 32/2021 of 28 December, 2021.
Incompatibilities: This contract might be incompatible with other contracts.
The chosen candidate will carry out the following tasks:
* Data analysis: Processing and organizing micro-datasets.
* Statistical analysis: Applying statistical methodologies to the data.
* Programming (code editing): Adapting existing scripts and code packages (in R, Python, Stata or others).
Reporting line: this position reports to the principal investigator of the project.

QUALIFICATIONS

SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE
* IT: Advanced or proficiency level of Excel.
* Scientific software: Working or advanced command of Stata, R and Python.
* Languages: Advanced level in English, both spoken and written (CEFR: C1 or C2; IELTS: minimum 7.0; TOEFL minimum 101).
* Economics: courses in econometrics and macroeconomics. International trade, economic geography and development economics specially valued.

All the announcements about the selection process for this position will be posted on the Pompeu Fabra University website.
25 June 2025 Publication of the list of admitted and excluded candidates to take part in the selection process. The list includes the motivation for exclusion from the selection process, and 3 working days are given to submit allegations.
1-2-3 July 2025 The Selection Committee decides which admitted candidates will be interviewed. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted via email to arrange the interview; each shortlisted candidate will be given the detailed rating which will be used by the Selection Committee to assess their fit to the required experience, qualifications and skills/knowledge.
Before or after the interview, if the Committee deems it necessary, one or two referees will be contacted, with the prior permission of the applicant.
4 July 2025 Publication of the selection process results. Allegations can be submitted in the following 5 working days.
