The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC‑CNS) is the leading supercomputing centre in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and hosts EuroHPC JU as a primary infrastructure provider. BSC’s mission is to research, develop, and manage information technologies to facilitate scientific progress across life, earth, and engineering sciences.
Context And Mission
We seek a Machine Learning Engineer to join the Earth Sciences department within the AI Factory initiative. The AI Factory accelerates AI adoption across industry sectors, providing training, networking, and innovation support. The selected candidate will support the development and deployment of AI services related to climate change, coordinate AI software integration on the MareNostrum5 AI partition, and collaborate with consortium members and domain scientists.
Key Duties
* Support the documentation and curation of AI software employed in the AI Factory
* Support the deployment and maintenance of AI software on MareNostrum5 AI partition
* Design, implement, and optimize machine‑learning pipelines for environmental‑related applications
* Collaborate with domain scientists and external users to develop AI solutions
* Support users from the AI Factory in accessing and utilising AI tools and services
* Participate in collaborative development within the AI Factory consortium
* Participate in technical reporting and scientific publications relating to the AI Factory software, with opportunities to be involved in academic papers and project reporting
Requirements
* Education
o Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, Environmental Sciences, or a related field
* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Strong programming skills in Python and experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Scikit‑learn
o Proven experience developing and training machine‑learning models, especially deep‑learning architectures
o Background in handling, analysing, and validating large‑scale datasets
o Experience in a UNIX‑based computational environment
* Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Familiarity with climate, weather, and Earth‑system datasets (NetCDF, Zarr)
o Experience in high‑performance computing and parallelised machine‑learning workflows
o Proficiency in GPU‑accelerated frameworks such as TensorFlow, RAPIDS, JAX or distributed training with Dask
o Understanding of climate and weather models
* Competences
o Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills with the ability to optimise computational workflows
o Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a research environment
o Excellent communication skills and the ability to document and present research findings
o Proficiency in written and spoken English
Conditions
* The position will be located at BSC within the Directors Department
* Full‑time contract (37.5 h/week) with a supportive work environment, flexible hours, and an extensive training plan
* Duration: 3 years
* Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December (collective agreement)
* Salary: competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, according to the cost of living in Barcelona
* Starting date: ASAP

Recruitment Process
The selection will be carried out through a competitive examination system (‘Concurso‑Oposición’). The recruitment process consists of two phases:
1. Curriculum Analysis – evaluation of experience, degrees, and training (40 point scale)
2. Interview phase – technical, administrative, and personality assessment (60 point scale). A minimum of 30 points out of 60 is required for eligibility.
All candidates will receive feedback following the interview stage. The panel will include at least 25 % representation of women and will apply OTM‑R principles throughout the process.
