As a Principal Automation Engineer, you design, integrate and test package controllers and integrated control & safety systems for Plug's hydrogen generation platforms. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams across engineering, manufacturing and service to ensure robust, compliant, and reliable control solutions. You drive system architecture, safety and cybersecurity alignment, and continuous improvement across projects. This role offers the opportunity to shape next-generation automation for a fast-paced, mission-driven organization.

• Lead technical design of automation and control systems, including PLCs, DCS/ESD and ICSS
• Develop basis of design and architectures for automation subsystems with cost and reliability focus
• Ensure interfaces with process, instrumentation, functional safety and electrical disciplines align
• Coordinate technical communications with external parties and clients, review subcontractor documents
• Support conceptual/basic design and assist cost estimation (hours, equipment, budgets)
• Create system specifications/philosophies for automation procurement
• Develop project-specific designs with documentation (philosophies, layouts, diagrams)
• Ensure functional safety software/design complies with IEC 61508; embed cybersecurity per IEC 62443
• Conduct technical reviews (P&ID, HAZOP, SIL, LOPA, etc.)
• Identify issues and drive clarity across engineering phases
• Provide frontline support for control system faults and subsystem communications
• Perform diagnostic and failure analysis on PLC/DCS-based systems
• Contribute to Functional Safety Management processes and organization-wide IACS cybersecurity
• Remain current with codes & standards (CE, IEC, ATEX) and ensure designs comply
• Grow automation knowledge within the team and mentor junior engineers
• Represent Plug Power professionally in all interactions
Responsabilidades
• 10+ years of automation engineering experience; xpzdshu renewable energy or manufacturing/testing background preferred
• Experience with package controllers and SCADA-HMI systems; architecture design
• Hands-on with PLC/DCS hardware and I/O modules, ESD/SIS, BPCS
• Proficiency with Siemens S7-1500, Schneider Electric M580; DeltaV, 800xA, Experion C300, PCS7
• Functional safety knowledge per IEC 61511/61508; safety certification is a plus
• OT cybersecurity expertise with IEC 62443; practical network and protocol knowledge
• Proficient in diagnostic and troubleshooting of automation systems
• Strong communication, independent work capability, and cross-disciplinary collaboration
