The Surfacing Artist establishes the look and surface qualities for animated characters, props, and environments. Through the use and development of textures and shaders, the Surfacing Artist guides the production process to achieve the desired visual style. The Surfacing Artist collaborates with or aids the rest of the CG team to ensure the proper workflow and specifications are being developed to achieve the desired look on all textures.
Key Responsibilities:
* Work within a brief and use 2D design references to paint CG textures faithful to the production style;
* Develop shaders for all CG assets;
* Submit CG assets for review, rendering them to best indicate their use within the Series;
* Create UV maps as required, adhering to pipeline requirements and suitable for asset resolution and complexity;
* Collaborate with the CG modeling team to provide feedback on UV mapping suitable for the assets;
* Work with the CG and BG teams on creative and technical issues to ensure high-standard asset delivery;
* Partner with lighters and compositors to meet schedules and deadlines as established by the Producer and Directors;
* Perform all other duties reasonably required by the Production Company.
About you:
* Experience in animated features or episodic animation (not live action);
* Portfolios demonstrating mature, graphic stylization of reality, similar to Spiderverse, Entergalactic, Arcane, or The Witness (Love, Death, Robots);
* Deep knowledge of Maya, Photoshop, and proficiency in painting software like Substance Painter or Mari;
* Experience with Katana and knowledge of photoreal and non-photoreal renderers;
* Ability to work closely with CG and Design teams;
* Ability to work in a team and follow guidance from supervisors;
* Maintain productivity in a fast-paced environment while producing high-quality work;
* Ability to work independently and under supervision;
* Excellent communication and time management skills, with ability to multitask and prioritize.
Additional responsibilities include tasks related to computer-generated animation as reasonably required by the production.
