The Basque Center for Biophysics / Instituto Biofisika (https://biofisika.org), located at the Leioa Campus of the University of the Basque Country, is currently accepting applications for research scientist positions at both the postdoctoral and pre-doctoral levels. Successful candidates will join the Laboratory for Numerical Methods of Cryo Electron Tomography, led by Dr. Daniel Castaño Díez. The lab is dedicated to advancing computational methodologies for the automated analysis and interpretation of 3D cellular and tissue imagery, primarily through its in-house software platform, Dynamo (https://dynamo-em.org).
The research project "RGP0017/2020 - Time-resolving the mechanism of exocytosis in situ," funded by the Human Frontiers Science Program, has revealed deep insights into the mechanics of exocytosis in living cells through the development of new cryo electron tomography processing methods. We now aim to extend these methods by integrating novel deep learning techniques for identifying and analyzing small, flexible proteins within their natural environments.
Ideal candidates must hold an official degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or similar, with a strong background in Matlab. An interest in Life Sciences research is assumed. Necessary qualifications include:
1. Experience in Deep Learning and/or other Artificial Intelligence methods.
2. Solid background in numerical mathematics, including optimization and heuristic optimization methods.
3. Proficiency in software prototyping and production, with good command of MATLAB, Python, C++, and/or CUDA.
Additional desirable qualifications include:
1. Experience in Image Processing for Electron Microscopy.
2. Experience in Image Processing for Light Microscopy.
3. Experience in Molecular Dynamics Simulations.
Positions are immediately available, with a flexible start date aiming for Fall 2025. Funding is secured until August 2029. Salaries will be aligned with the candidate’s skills and experience, within the official ranges established by the Spanish Research Council (CSIC): €27,000–€42,000 gross per year for BSc/MSc holders, and €38,000–€53,000 for PhD holders. Applications should be sent as a single PDF to daniel.castano@csic, including:
* Curriculum Vitae with academic record.
* A motivation letter.
* Two reference letters or contact emails of referees.
