Offer Description We are offering an exciting “Scientific Associate” position at the University of Barcelona, within the

Artificial Intelligence in Medicine lab (

www.bcn-aim.org

). This position is funded under COMPASS-AI, an EU-funded project which focuses on strengthening trustworthy and successful AI adoption in healthcare across Europe and beyond. BCN-AIM is the coordinating lab behind FUTURE-AI, an internationally recognised framework for trustworthy and ethical AI in healthcare. Through COMPASS-AI, the lab is contributing to activities that further support the practical adoption of trustworthy AI principles and strengthen the wider European community working in this area.

We are looking for a motivated

S

cientific Associate

with strong analytical, writing, communication and organisational skills, who will support the PI and the lab in developing new research use cases based on COMPASS-AI, preparing competitive grant proposals, and contributing to the strategic scientific activities of the group in the field of trustworthy AI. The

Scientific Associate

will play a transversal role within the lab, supporting the development of new research ideas, expanding the applications of FUTURE-AI principles, and exploring how COMPASS-AI results can inform future projects, new use cases, and international collaborations. The position is ideal for a scientist who enjoys scientific writing, shaping research concepts, coordinating collaborative proposals, and contributing to high-impact AI-in-healthcare initiatives.

The main duties of the

Scientific Associate

will include:

Identifying relevant EU and other funding opportunities for follow-up projects related to COMPASS-AI.

Coordinating the preparation and submission of new follow-up grants in the field of trustworthy AI.

Writing scientific sections of grant proposals.

Writing non-scientific sections of grants (impact, ethics, communication).

Contributing to scientific publications, reviews, and white papers.

Preparing presentations and research summaries for partners, policymakers and other stakeholders.

Organising dissemination and communication activities on trustworthy AI, including workshops, webinars, and social media posts.

The requirements for the position are:

PhD in artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, computer science, life sciences, social sciences, or a related discipline.

Experience in scientific writing, preferably for EU (H2020/HEurope) and/or other international research grant proposals.

Strong organisational and coordination abilities, including skills to structure complex concepts into new storylines.

Ability to work independently and manage parallel deadlines in a highly collaborative environment.

Familiarity with interdisciplinary research in the field of AI and/or healthcare.

Excellent writing and communication skills in English.

Knowledge of AI and data science applications in healthcare.

Knowledge in the fields of responsible AI, trustworthy AI, ethical AI, and related topics.

Experience in scientific dissemination and communication (web, media, events, reviews).

The research projects:

You will join our transversal trustworthy AI team, as part of ongoing projects, particularly COMPASS-AI. In this project we will build on FUTURE-AI, our established framework for trustworthy and deployable AI in healthcare (see BMJ 2025 paper).

To support adoption and prepare Europe for broad deployment, the project will launch extended FUTURE-AI into a practica resource and an interactive digital platform consolidating and mapping best practices. Complemented by actionable policy recommendations, COMPASS-AI will accelerate sustainable, large-scale AI adoption across Europe and beyond.

The group:

The successful candidate will join the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Lab ( www.bcn-aim.org ), which is an integral part of the University of Barcelona’s Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. It is a young and dynamic research lab, highly active in international projects, and composed of >30 enthusiastic academics, researchers, students and research managers, with expertise in data science, machine/deep learning, biomedical informatics, trustworthy AI, social sciences/ethics, and health-related applications. The research group has an established track record in coordination and participation in European and international projects (> 12 million Euros over the last 5 years) in biomedical data science and healthcare AI ( e.g. EuCanImage, LongITools, RadioVal, DataTools4Heart, Youth-GEMs, HappyMums, AIMIX, AI4HF, YOUTHreach, STAGE, AFRICAI-RI).

The institution:

The University of Barcelona (UB), founded in 1450, is one of the oldest universities in Spain. It comprises a student body of >80,000 and >4,500 research staff members. With 73 undergraduate programs, 273 graduate programs and 48 doctorate programs, UB is the largest university in Barcelona and Catalonia. The UB is ranked the first Spanish university according to several rankings (QS World University Rankings 2025, Shanghai Ranking 2025). It is particularly interested in fostering international relations and, for many years, has managed an average of 150 European projects per year. The University of Barcelona is part of the prestigious League of European Universities Research (LERU).

Gross salary per year: 45.000 €.

The application period is from 25 November to 23 December 2025.

- PhD in artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, computer science, life sciences, or a related discipline.

- Proven experience in scientific writing, preferably in EU or international research grant proposals.

- Attention to detail and organisational skills.

- Experience in scientific communication in multidisciplinary teams.

- Excellent English, both written and spoken.

- Able to clearly present complex results to varied audiences.

Minimum score to pass the selection process: 60/100 points.

Selection process

An interview will be conducted if the evaluation committee deems it necessary.

Be in possession of the doctor's degree at the time of the formalization of the contract.

Additional comments

Duration of the contract of employment:12months,renewable up to 31/12/2029.
