We are currently accepting applications for a tenure-track position as an Ikerbasque Research Fellow. This is a unique opportunity for a highly experienced experimental physicist to join the Quantum Science Lab at DIPC, working within a high-profile research team.
The Role
The DIPC, in collaboration with Ikerbasque (Basque Foundation for Science – ), seeks a motivated experimental physicist to lead a new research line on atomic quantum computation using single dysprosium atoms in programmable optical tweezer arrays.
This research will be integrated with the Quantum Science Lab's activities at DIPC, led by PIs F. Ferlaino and M. Mark, fostering collaboration with local and international partners. The position offers the chance to develop a pioneering quantum experiment from its early stages and influence the scientific strategy and execution of the project.
Desired Background & Competences
- A PhD in experimental quantum physics, AMO physics, quantum optics, or a related field (completed by December 2022).
- Experience in designing and constructing ultracold quantum-gas experiments; experience with two and many-valence electron atoms, Rydberg physics, or quantum gas microscopy is advantageous.
- Proven ability to lead advanced experimental research in atomic quantum physics.
- Technical skills in laser systems, vacuum technology, and electronic controls.
- Experience supervising students in an experimental setting.
- Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
- Ability to develop and lead research proposals for international funding (e.g., ERC, Horizon Europe).
- Excellent communication skills and motivation for collaborative international research.
- Commitment to a long-term scientific vision and strategic project development.
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead planning, construction, and operation of the dysprosium-based reconfigurable tweezer array experiment.
- Develop techniques for assembling defect-free atomic arrays for quantum information processing.
- Expand research in quantum computation and information processing, presenting findings to the quantum community.
- Oversee scientific and technical operations within the Quantum Science Lab.
- Mentor and co-supervise PhD students, postdocs, and junior researchers.
- Contribute to publications, funding proposals, and dissemination activities.
- Build strategic collaborations locally and internationally.
- Help foster an innovative research environment and manage laboratory administration.
Working Conditions
Estimated annual gross salary will be commensurate with qualifications. The target start date is December 31, 2025. The position offers a stimulating environment and career development opportunities. DIPC promotes diversity and inclusion and welcomes applicants of all backgrounds.
The Center
DIPC is a research center dedicated to cutting-edge physics research and societal engagement. Located in Donostia/San Sebastian, Spain, it is recognized as a 'Basque Excellence Research Center' and a 'Severo Ochoa' Excellence Center.
About the Team
The research will be embedded in the Quantum Science Lab at DIPC, led by PIs F. Ferlaino and M. Mark, with strong ties to local and international quantum research groups.
