Research support engineer – Harmonization of atmospheric composition measurements for model evaluation (RE1)

About the Role
Within the Earth Sciences Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC‑CNS), the Atmospheric Composition (AC) group focuses on better understanding and predicting the spatiotemporal variations of atmospheric pollutants and their effects. The group maintains the GHOST dataset – a globally harmonised observational archive used for model evaluation and data assimilation. This position will support data curation and harmonisation activities for atmospheric composition observations, facilitating the use of up‑to‑date measurements in model development, evaluation, and ML/AI solutions.
Key Duties
* Extend the GHOST dataset with new atmospheric composition measurements.
* Apply existing solutions or develop automated procedures for quality assurance of observations.
* Analyze datasets using standardized diagnostics.
* Support researchers in evaluating numerical model experiments.
* Interact with atmospheric composition scientists to understand and respond to their needs.
* Contribute to dissemination activities in peer‑reviewed publications, internal and external meetings, and conferences.
Requirements
* Education: Degree in physics and MSc in atmospheric sciences.
* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience:
o Experience with data manipulation and analysis (0–2 years).
o Experience in programming (Python, FORTRAN, R – 3–5 years).
o Experience in UNIX/Linux environments (3–5 years).
o Knowledge of Earth Modelling file types (NetCDF, HDF5, GRIB) is valued.
o Experience in related fields is valued.
* Additional Knowledge: Fluent English, written and spoken.
* Competences:
o Capacity to interact with both atmospheric composition scientists and computer scientists.
o Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under deadlines.
o Ability to work independently and within a team.
Conditions
* Location: BSC, Earth Sciences Department.
* Contract: Full‑time 35 h/week; open‑ended, flexible hours, extensive training plan.

* Holidays: 22 days + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st December per collective agreement.
* Salary: Competitive, commensurate with qualifications and living costs in Barcelona.
