POSITION TITLE: Middle/Upper School Band Teacher and IB Diploma Program Music (One-year contract)
STARTING DATE: August 2026
POSITION OVERVIEW:
ASM is seeking a dynamic, collaborative, and globally-minded Middle/Upper School Band and IB Diploma Program music teacher to lead and further develop its instrumental music program. The successful candidate will inspire students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and support their musical, social, and academic growth through a concept-driven, inquiry-based approach to music education. The teacher will work collaboratively within a K–12 music program and contribute to a school community that values and supports a comprehensive approach to music education. Candidates must demonstrate flexibility to teach classes in other areas as needed, including exploratory courses, in support of the school's overall academic program.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Teach Middle and Upper School Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble classes, including beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, as assigned
* Teach IB Diploma Program Music (SL & HL) to G11 and 12 students
* Implement a vertically aligned curriculum that emphasizes conceptual understanding, technical skill development, and student agency
* Foster musicianship, ensemble collaboration, technique, and music literacy in a culturally responsive learning environment
* Plan learning experiences that promote inquiry, reflection, creativity, and authentic performance opportunities
* Prepare students for concerts, assemblies, and community events, including evening performances
* Collaborate closely with K–12 music colleagues to ensure continuity, alignment, and shared vision across the instrumental and general music programs
* Serve as an advisor to a group of Middle or Upper School students, supporting academic growth and social-emotional well-being
* Work collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines to support interdisciplinary learning and shared approaches to assessment and reflection
* Contribute actively to curriculum development, assessment design, and ongoing program review
* Supervise Extended Essays as assigned
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
* Teacher certification and/or degree in Music Education or a related field, with specialization in instrumental music
* Experience in teaching IBDP Music preferred
* Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience, preferably in Middle and/or Upper School settings
* Experience teaching students from diverse cultural, linguistic, and educational backgrounds
* Strong background in band instruction
* Experience designing learning experiences that integrate inquiry, conceptual understanding, and skill-based outcomes
* Experience with performance-based assessment and the use of clear criteria to support student reflection and growth
* Familiarity with collaborative, student-centered, and project-based learning approaches
* Effective use of technology to support instruction, assessment, and creative expression
* Experience working with English Language Learners and students with diverse learning needs
* Willingness to serve as a student advisor and participate fully in the life of an international school community
* Strong communication skills, reflective practice, and a commitment to continuous professional learning
