Context And Mission
We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher to join our group for a position focusing. This position will be hosted in the Responsibility in AI & Ethics (RAI-E) Group within BSC's AI Institute. The RAI-E Group undertakes fundamental research to ensure that AI is developed, deployed, and governed in an ethical and responsible manner, aligned with human values and with a positive impact on society.
The offered position will contribute to the Horizon Europe project AIXPERT ().
The candidate will perform independent research, contribute to the completion of project deliverables, and actively publish the scientific results in high-quality journals.
Key Duties
* Research the ethical, legal, socio-economic, and cultural implications of AI systems across their lifecycles, with a focus on identifying risks, biases, and ethical trade-offs in diverse sectoral contexts.
* Develop methodologies, frameworks, and indicators to operationalise Responsible AI, including bias mitigation strategies, accountability mechanisms, and alignment with evolving regulatory standards and international norms.
* Advance AI governance by producing actionable guidelines and policy-relevant outputs that bridge cutting-edge research with ethical and legal frameworks, supporting responsible AI deployment at scale.
* Foster interdisciplinary, stakeholder-driven research through co-creation, dissemination, and awareness initiatives to promote fair, transparent, and societally beneficial AI systems.
Requirements
* Education
o PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computational Social Sciences and related fields.
* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Demonstrated experience in at least one of these research fields: XAI, AI Fairness, AI Safety, Responsible AI
o Identification of AI risks and biases in different domains
o Methods to study Human-Machine Interaction and user perception
o Proven ability to prepare and submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed scientific journals
* Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Experience in producing technical deliverables and reports on AI governance
o Interest and capacity to participating in the writing of research and computing proposals
o Additional training in Ethical, Legal, Socio-Economic and Cultural aspects of AI.
* Competences
o High level of autonomy, responsibility, and ability to manage complex activities across multiple partners and timelines.
o Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary and multicultural environments.
o Fluency in Spanish and English is required; Catalan is an asset.
Conditions
* The position will be located at BSC within the Directors Department

* Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
* Holidays: 22 days of holidays + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
* Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
* Starting date: June 2026
