Context And Mission
Within the Barcelona Supercomputing Center the Earth Sciences Department, led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes, aims to deliver novel, advanced, and well-evaluated high-resolution global climate models capable of simulating and predicting climate estimations with unprecedented reliability. The successful candidate will be part of the Data and Diagnostics Team a sub-group in the section of Computational Earth Sciences.
This team, composed of 22 members but steadily growing, performs R&D tasks in the field of Earth Sciences data management, web processing and diagnostics development.
Members of the team often support the other groups in the departments with technical challenges in the field. An important task is the visualization of the data produced by climate models and other groups from the department for user events and project dissemination.
Key Duties
* Preparation and analysis of climate datasets for visualization
purposes
* Creation of data visualization products aimed at science communication and scientific publications
* Development of scientific visualization software using python
Requirements
* Education
o Having a Bachelor in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or related discipline
o Having a Master’s degree or PhD will be valued
* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Strong skills in Python and experience with scripting languages
o Experience in using Blender or similar 3D visualization software
for scientific purposes
o Experience or knowledge in Earth science data formats (netcdf, grib,...)
o Experience or knowledge in the usage and support of Unix- or
Linux-based HPC systems
* Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Fluency in English
o Experience or knowledge in scientific data visualization and
diagnostics will be valued
o Experience or knowledge in data science will be valued

Conditions
* The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
