Human Factors & Usability Engineer – Medical Device Development

Position: Permanent, Full-time

Location: Barcelona

Your mission

We are scientists, doctors, techies, and humanity lovers, dedicated to pioneering real-time precision neurology to cure brain-related disorders. INBRAIN harnesses the extraordinary properties of Graphene, the world’s thinnest and Nobel-prize-winning material, to develop high-resolution neural systems. Our goal is to decode and modulate neural networks to restore people's lives.

Our subsidiary, INNERVIA, collaborates with Merck KGaA over four years to decode and modulate the Vagus nerve at high resolution, aiming to deliver therapies targeting the peripheral nervous system.

As a Human Factors & Usability Engineer at INBRAIN, you will oversee usability across our ecosystem of implantable and external components, ensuring our VNS platform is intuitive, safe, and effective for users including patients, clinicians, and caregivers. You will lead human factors strategies, including user research, interface design, usability testing, and regulatory compliance (IEC 62366, ISO 14971, FDA guidance).

Your profile

Main responsibilities:

* Conduct user research to understand needs, focusing on cognitive and motor challenges (e.g., Parkinson’s disease) through interviews, contextual inquiry, and task analysis.
* Lead usability testing for neuromodulation devices, identifying pain points, safety risks, and opportunities for interface and workflow improvements.
* Ensure compliance with medical device usability standards (IEC 62366, ISO 14971, FDA guidance). Maintain the usability engineering file.
* Collaborate with engineering, clinical, regulatory, and quality teams to integrate user-centered design principles and meet safety requirements.
* Work with surgical teams to define and document implantation procedures, identifying ergonomic and safety considerations, and providing documentation for training and validation.
* Partner with software developers and designers to define system requirements for therapy management applications.
* Develop prototypes, wireframes, and mockups, iterating based on user feedback and usability testing results.
* Identify and mitigate use-related risks through usability testing and risk analysis, integrating findings into overall risk management.

Mandatory Qualifications and Soft Skills:

* Master’s degree in Human Factors Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Design, or related fields.
* Fluent in English (written and spoken).
* At least 3 years of experience in usability engineering for medical devices, especially implantable or neurostimulation systems.
* Proven experience in usability testing and user research in healthcare.
* Knowledge of regulatory standards (IEC 62366, FDA), risk management (ISO 14971), and usability processes.
* Proficiency with design tools like Sketch, Figma, or Adobe XD.
* Strong communication skills for documenting and presenting findings.
* Ability to analyze complex challenges and develop user-friendly solutions.
* Self-motivated and able to manage tasks independently.
* Excellent teamwork and communication skills across multidisciplinary teams.
* Comfortable in a start-up environment, adaptable to changing priorities.
* High precision in design, documentation, and compliance.

Nice to have:

* Experience with Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) systems.
* Experience designing for Parkinson’s or similar populations.
* Knowledge of neurostimulation or implantable devices.
* Experience leading workshops or brainstorming sessions.
* Experience in usability for surgical procedures.
