Project Description

The PhD project is part of the B3PO initiative – Better BioBased Polymer. The project title is: "Reaction engineering for the Enzyme-Assisted Modification of Solid Lignin". The B3PO consortium comprises 9 academic laboratories and collaborators from industry and high-tech SMEs, working to advance biobased materials within a sustainable, circular economy framework.
The FQPIMA group at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials at UCM seeks a motivated candidate to perform a PhD in bioprocess engineering and biocatalysis. The aim is to study enzyme-assisted modification of lignin-derived phenolic liquors to control grafting onto biopolymers (e.g., cellulose-rich solids from various biomass resources). The project (DC04) will be co-supervised by Prof. Juan M. Bolivar (UCM, Madrid) and Prof. Rupert Kragl (TUG, Austria) as a double degree PhD with a 9-month secondment to TUG. An industrial secondment at Novonesis is planned. The PhD candidate will participate in training and workshops organized by the B3PO MSCA-DN and contribute to dissemination of results through public engagement and scientific platforms.

Requirements

Education
Master Degree or equivalent in (Bio)process engineering, (Bio)chemical engineering, or industrial biotechnology. Eligible as a graduate student at UCM.
Skills/Qualifications
Applicants should have completed a Master’s degree or equivalent before recruitment and be capable of conducting research independently in an international, interdisciplinary environment. Excellent command of English (spoken and written) and willingness to learn the local language are required. Additional requirements: experience in enzyme biocatalysis; prior biopolymer modification experience; knowledge of applied kinetics and analytical chemistry is a plus.
Languages: ENGLISH – Level: Excellent

Working Conditions & Eligibility

Working environment: International research environment with access to modern laboratories and interdisciplinary collaboration within a European Doctoral Network. The PhD student will benefit from structured training, international secondments, and transferable skills courses, and will work with other international PhD students within the B3PO project.
MSCA eligibility (must-have): At recruitment, the applicant must be in the first four years of their research career, must not hold a doctoral degree, and must not have resided in Spain or conducted main activity there for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to recruitment.
