Job Description

Learning Support Assistant

Responsible to: Head of Stage

Support for Pupils

* Use specialist (EYFS/curricular/learning) skills/training/experience to support pupils
* Establish productive working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations with positive reinforcement of good behaviour
* Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils within the classroom
* Support pupils consistently whilst recognising and responding to their individual needs and the delivery of tailored learning activities as devised by the teacher, either in a small group setting or on a one-to-one basis
* Encourage pupils to interact and work cooperatively with others
* Engage all pupils in activities which are suitable for their age
* Promote independence and employ strategies to recognise and reward achievement of self-reliance
* Guiding, monitoring and recording student progress. Provide feedback to pupil in relation to development and achievement

Support for the Teacher

* Working with the guidance and direction of teachers or leaders
* Work with the teacher to establish an appropriate learning environment
* Work with the teacher in lesson planning, evaluating and adjusting lessons/work plans as appropriate
* Monitor and evaluate pupils response to learning activities through observation and planned recording of achievement against predetermined learning objectives
* Provide objective and accurate feedback and reports along with appropriate evidence to support them
* Be responsible for keeping and updating records as agreed with the teacher, contributing to reviews of systems/records as requested
* Undertake marking of pupils’ work and accurately record achievement/progress
* Promote positive values, attitudes and good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour
* Liaise sensitively and effectively with parents/carers as agreed with the teacher within your role/responsibility and participate in feedback sessions/meetings with parents with, or as directed

Support for the Curriculum

* Implement agreed learning activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to pupil responses/needs
* Implement EYFS Framework or UK National Curriculum and make effective use of opportunities provided by other learning activities to support the development of relevant skills
* Support the use of technology in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use
* Help pupils to assess learning activities through specialist support
* Determine the need for, prepare and maintain general and specialist equipment and resources

Support for the School

* Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
* Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
* Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
* Establish constructive relationships and communicate with other agencies/professionals in liaison with the teacher to support achievement and progress of pupils
* Attend and participate in regular teaching assistant meetings
* Participate in training and other learning activities as required
* Recognise own strengths and areas of expertise and use these to advise and support others
* Supervise pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required
* Provide support outside of class, such as covering short term absences of teaching assistant, teacher colleagues
* Covering lunch time, break time and end of day duties

Behaviour and Safety

* Establish a safe, purposeful and stimulating environment for pupils, rooted in mutual respect and establish a framework for discipline with a range of strategies, using praise, sanctions and rewards consistently and fairly
* Manage classes effectively, using approaches which are appropriate to pupils’ needs in order to inspire, motivate and challenge pupils
* Maintain good relationships with pupils, exercise appropriate authority, and act decisively when necessary
* Be a positive role model and demonstrate consistently the positive attitudes, values and behaviour, which are expected of pupils
* Have high expectations of behaviour, promoting self-control and independence of all learners
* Be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school, raising any concerns following school protocol/procedures

Team working and collaboration

* Participate in any relevant meetings/professional development opportunities at the school, which relate to the learners, curriculum or organisation of the school and assemblies
* Work as a team member and identify opportunities for working with colleagues and sharing the development of effective practice with them
* Contribute to the selection and professional development
* Ensure that colleagues working with you are appropriately involved in supporting learning and understand the roles they are expected to fulfill
* Cover for absent colleagues if required

Fulfill wider professional responsibilities

* Work collaboratively with others to develop effective professional relationships
* Deploy support staff effectively as appropriate
* Communicate effectively with parents/carers with regard to pupils’ achievements and well-being using school systems/processes as appropriate
* Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school
* Partake in playground and lunch duties where necessary

Professional development

* Regularly review the effectiveness of your teaching and assessment procedures and its impact on pupils’ progress, attainment and well being, refining your approaches where necessary responding to advice and feedback from colleagues
* Be responsible for improving your teaching through participating fully in training and development opportunities identified by the school or as developed as an outcome of your appraisal


Requisitos

* Excellent communication and listening skills
* Good organisational skills to plan the day and respond to the different needs of the children you teach
* The ability to inspire and enthuse young children
* Energy, resourcefulness, responsibility, patience and a caring nature
* An understanding of the needs and feelings of children
* Ability to work independently with children, as well as being able to work in the wider Early Years/school team
* A sense of humour and the ability to keep things in perspective
* Experience and a solid understanding of the EYFS Curriculum
* A demonstrable knowledge of children's development, their needs and the provision of positive play
* Teaching assistant, Learning Support assistant or other equivalent Early Years Practitioner qualification
* A native or C1 level speaker of English
* Satisfactory DBS and reference checks
