Python data pipelines Research Engineer – (RE2) Starting date: ASAP

Closing Date: Wednesday 27 May 2026

About BSC The Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC‑CNS) is the leading supercomputing centre in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now the hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large‑scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D; into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1,000 staff from 60 countries.

Context and Mission The Earth Data and Diagnostics Team (DDT) of the Barcelona Computing Center is involved in several European projects involving the creation of data pipelines for the transformation, standardisation, curation, and quality control of outputs from coupled climate model simulations. Among these projects, the Climate Adaptation Twin from Destination Earth and the Climate Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP7) present large challenges to treat the data in an efficient way.

The successful candidate will implement a pipeline to convert data from GRIB model data hosted in a Fields Data Base (FDB) into standardised netCDF files following the CMOR CMIP7 format. The work will be based on existing Python tools adapted to the specificities of the simulations from these projects (large data volumes, grid transformation, …). The work will be done in collaboration with the developers of similar tools in the department, and will be conducted on high performance computers of processing machines where the data is produced.

This task is the first priority for the first months of the contract, but collaboration to similar data pipelines for other European projects is also expected.

Key Duties

Develop a Python software to convert climate models from GRIB/FDB to CMOR netCDF

Participate to the publication of the data on the ESGF node

Integrate the pipeline in an automated workflow

Education

Having a Masters in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Physics or related discipline

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience

Good development skills and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments.
