About BSC
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

If you consider that you do not meet all the requirements, we encourage you to continue applying for the job offer. We value diversity of experiences and skills, and you could bring unique perspectives to our team.

Context And Mission
The last decade has witnessed a sudden breakthrough of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Automotive market (among others) to deliver cutting-edge functionalities, ranging from advanced driving assistance solutions to full autonomous operation. Pedestrian detection, unintentional lane crossing monitoring, and Tesla AutoPilot are well-known functionalities increasingly tested and deployed in modern cars. The complexity emerging from the time-constrained interaction between modules in large systems is typically handled by relying on specialized middleware solutions, such as ROS2, CyberRT, or Autoware, to be executed on top of the operating system.

The High-Performance Embedded Systems (HPES) laboratory aims at enabling the adoption of hardware, software, and artificial intelligence (AI) HPC solutions in embedded systems with some form of criticality. The objective of this position is to contribute to the lab's research line on the characterization and optimization of autonomous driving frameworks. The candidate is expected to analyze and model the behavior of a representative AI-based autonomous driving system, deploying one of these specialized middleware solutions, on top of general-purpose and/or automotive operating systems. The candidate is expected to focus on the understanding of the timing semantics of the middleware software architecture and on the identification of how it can effectively support system-level constraints. The gained insight will enable the design and development of generic and ad-hoc solutions for efficient monitoring and optimization of the system timing behavior. The candidate will be involved in all stages of typical research and development activities and will deal with both algorithm design/implementation and experimental evaluation of the devised solutions on representative automotive setups (reference boards, applications, and simulation).

The candidate will join a team of experienced researchers and engineers, helping him/her to familiarize with the needed tools and developments for a smooth ramp-up process. This position offers the possibility to collaborate with research institutions and industry from several European locations, thus offering enriching experiences and outstanding learning opportunities.

Key Duties

* Familiarize with a representative AI-based autonomous driving setup and simulation environment
* Analyse representative state-of-the-art middleware frameworks and understand how they interact with the underlying operating system to support the correct and timely execution of critical AI-based functions
* Model the timing behavior of the analysed system, with particular attention to robustness to jittery behavior and determinism
* Identify and implement optimization opportunities in the deployment and configuration of the applications and middleware layers

Requirements

* Education

* Bachelor's degree in computer science, Computer Architectures, Mathematics, or similar

* Master's degree (or final stage of such degree) in Computer Science, Computer Architectures, Mathematics, or similar

* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience

* Familiarity with distributed middleware solutions.

* Strong background and experience in AI libraries and frameworks.
* Proficiency in generic programming languages (C, C++, etc.)
* Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g. Python)

* Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience

* A basic understanding of Linux processes and scheduling concepts is welcome

* Experience with autonomous driving simulation environments (e.g., CARLA) is a plus

* Competences

* Problem-solving, proactive, result-oriented work attitude

* Good communication skills, including proficiency in English (written and spoken).

Conditions

* The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Sciences Department
* We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures

* A cover/motivation letter with a statement of interest in English, clearly specifying for which specific area and topics the applicant wishes to be considered. Additionally, two references for further contacts must be included. Applications without this document will not be considered.

Development of the recruitment process
The selection will be carried out through a competitive examination system ("Concurso-Oposición"). The recruitment process consists of two phases:

* Curriculum Analysis: Evaluation of previous experience and/or scientific history, degree, training, and other professional information relevant to the position. - 40 points
* Interview phase: The highest-rated candidates at the curriculum level will be invited to the interview phase, conducted by the corresponding department and Human Resources. In this phase, technical competencies, knowledge, skills, and professional experience related to the position, as well as the required personal competencies, will be evaluated. - 60 points. A minimum of 30 points out of 60 must be obtained to be eligible for the position.

The recruitment panel will be composed of at least three people, ensuring at least 25% representation of women.

In accordance with OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for each vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will begin the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. At a minimum, a personality questionnaire as well as a technical exercise will be conducted during the process.

The panel will make a final decision, and all individuals who participated in the interview phase will receive feedback with details on the acceptance or rejection of their profile.
