The ICIQ Severo Ochoa Predoctoral Fellowships are aimed at exceptional graduate students from around the world. These PhD studentships support enrolment in a training and research program in chemistry, ultimately leading to a PhD in Chemistry in partnership with the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV). The PhD will be ascribed to the project CEX2024‐001469‐S funded by the 'Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades / Agencia Estatal de Investigación (MICIU/AEI)' within the 2024 call for proposals.
PhD Training Program
- The thesis project is aligned with one of the ICIQ‐Severo Ochoa Strategic Plan research lines: Innovative Catalysis, Renewable Energy Vectors, and Molecular Medicine.
- Supervision is provided by two ICIQ Group Leaders (supervisor and co‐supervisor), ensuring multidisciplinary mentorship.
- A complementary training program covers technical and soft skills: seminars, hands‐on training with state‐of‐the‐art instrumentation, IP management, entrepreneurship, research integrity, knowledge transfer, grant applications, project management, communication skills and career development.
- The SHARP (Severo Ochoa PhD Training Program) is a two‐week personalized annual program focusing on each PhD year.
- Opportunities for short‐term placements at distinguished international research institutions are available.
Responsibilities
- Conduct original research within the approved thesis project.
- Participate in semester‐long courses, workshops and seminars organized by ICIQ.
- Prepare and deliver scientific talks and poster presentations.
- Collaborate with research groups across the university and external partners.
- Maintain accurate experimental records and comply with safety regulations.
- Prepare an interim report at month 20 and a final report covering the fellowship duration.
Qualifications
- Excellent academic record and strong commitment to scientific research.
- Solid working knowledge of English (B2 level or higher is desirable).
- Motivation to research in chemistry or adjacent areas.
- Candidates should highlight their research background, career goals and the alignment with ICIQ research groups in a personal statement.
Eligibility Criteria
- Master's or equivalent degree in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy or related disciplines, completed by the time of enrolment.
- PhD holders or previous predoctoral fellowship beneficiaries in Spain are not eligible.

Evaluation Criteria
- Academic and scientific‐technical career path (up to 50 points).
- Scientific‐technical contributions (up to 45 points).
- Mobility and internationalisation (up to 5 points).
- Suitability for proposed research activities (up to 50 points).
Contract and Fellowship Conditions
Contract type: predoctoral(a research personnel in training) under Spanish Law 14/2011, June 1 — Employment contract for up to 4 years, renewable annually with satisfactory performance.
Salary: first year €20,364.88 / yr;
second‐fourth years €25,456.10 / yr.
Other benefits: enrolment fees coverage, short‐stay funding, full social security coverage, access to public health care and pension benefits.
Fellowships include full-time work at ICIQ and prohibition of other full‐time fellowship funding with the same purpose.
Scientific Monitoring and Reporting
Researchers must report to the Agencia Estatal de Investigación and prepare two reports: an interim report at month 20 and a final report covering the entire duration.
