We are recruiting for four part-time Invigilators: three positions offering 250 hours annually, and one position offering 125 hours annually.
Role Purpose
Ensure the smooth administration of British Council tests on test days, meeting all assigned duties and standards.
Role Context
The British Council offers access to English Language and other UK qualifications through its Examinations Services. These qualifications and assessments can transform lives by providing opportunities for life, study, or work both abroad and locally. They are key drivers of improvements in teaching, learning, and professional practice.
The British Council Examinations Services administers a variety of UK exams on behalf of UK-based Exam Boards and awarding bodies. These include English proficiency exams like IELTS, Cambridge English, and Aptis; school exams such as IGCSE, O and A levels for Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Edexcel International; and a range of professional and university qualifications like ACCA (accounting).
In Spain, exams are conducted in various venues across the country. This role will be based at one of our main centres in Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, or Palma, delivering tasks within the areas managed by these centres.
Invigilators are part of a broader team of exam venue staff, supporting the delivery of various tests in different locations. They work closely with British Council Examinations Services staff, other venue staff, and service providers to ensure smooth test days for all candidates.
Main Accountabilities
Service and Product Delivery Support
* Arrive at the test venue on time. Inform the appropriate staff promptly in case of delays.
* Set up the exam room(s) and venue, including checking desk distances, labelling desks, drawing room plans, and putting up signage.
* Manage the customer flow, guiding candidates through the pre-exam process.
* Explain exam procedures to candidates (e.g., no mobile phones in exam rooms, personal belongings in the cloakroom).
* Ensure all exam materials are counted at the beginning and end of each test.
* Collect all exam materials, ensuring the venue is clean and all materials are secured as per British Council instructions.
* Support the Test Day Supervisor in promoting candidate wellbeing and ensuring a positive test day experience.
* Perform additional duties as required.
Risk and Compliance
* Maintain the integrity and reputation of the British Council and examination boards by adhering to prescribed standards for customer service, security, and administration.
* Observe strict security and confidentiality concerning exam materials.
* Ensure no unauthorized items are taken into the test room and no test materials are removed by candidates.
* Apply and uphold guidelines for Child Protection, Equal Opportunities and Diversity, Health and Safety, Data Protection, and Anti-Fraud.
* Be familiar with emergency procedures for the test day venue.
* Monitor candidates during tests to prevent violations of test conditions.
* Report any incidents, emergencies, or security breaches to the Supervisor and follow correct procedures.
* Maintain accurate records of exam assignments and complete all required reports and logs.
Customer Support
* Provide clear directions and answer candidate enquiries to ensure a good customer experience.
* Ensure candidates follow exam procedures regarding their belongings.
* Conduct candidate entry, exit, identity checks, and Test Day photography as required.
* Ensure special arrangements are provided as needed.
* Represent the British Council positively by delivering high standards of customer care on exam days.
Managing Self and Others
* Attend all briefing and training sessions, completing mandatory training modules.
* Maintain positive relations with colleagues, including examiners, invigilators, supervisors, and exam centre staff.
* Work cooperatively with the supervisor and other invigilators to ensure candidates are supervised at all times.
* Participate in promotional events organized by the British Council
RoleSpecific Knowledge and Experience
Minimum:
* Experience of dealing with customers
* Experience of responding to children/ young adults and parents' needs (as customers) in a professional manner, to a high level of quality.
* Ability to understand compliance regulated procedures.
* English language level of CEFR B2 (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing skills) or equivalent (e.g. Cambridge English FCE, IELTS 6.5)
* Spanish/Local language level of CEFR C1
* Three months invigilation experience at the British Council
Desirable:
* Awareness of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
* English language level of CEFR C1 (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing skills) or equivalent (e.g. Cambridge English CAE, IELTS 7) or above
* Spanish/Local language level of CEFR C2 or native
* Six months invigilation experience at the British Council
Additional Job Requirement:
* Some invigilators may be required to travel, including overnight stays and/or work weekends (Saturdays and /or Sundays), public holidays. The majority will not have this requirement. During the recruitment process you will be asked to indicate your willingness to travel.
* Some invigilators may be required to work extended hours in the early morning or late evening, as this is when many examinations take place – requiring flexibility from post holders to work beyond the prior agreed work schedule.
* DBS checks or local equivalent required.
* Although there may not be a prescribed uniform for the role, whilst carrying out their duties, post holders must always be dressed in line with the cultural expectations of the relevant country in accordance with the role as representing the British Council. However, it is recommended that soft comfortable shoes are worn - noisy shoes and distracting jewellery are not permitted.
* Never accept gifts (in any form) from candidates, friends, relatives or teachers of candidates.
* Never use social media to discuss about any test, the test partners, other colleagues or test centres.
