 
        
        We're looking for a strong people leader with experience as Engineering Team Leader to join Sage and lead a multidisciplinary team of software engineers, test engineers and BAs working on mission-critical API and Web UI components. This is a hands-on leadership role reporting to the Director of Engineering, combining leadership, team management, technical delivery, and cross-functional collaboration in a global environment.
You'll provide strong technical direction while also supporting the professional growth of a team of software engineers, quality engineers and business analysts. The ideal candidate brings a background in software development (strong Java and ideally Ruby on Rails), cloud platforms (AWS (preferred)/GCP/Azure), and experience managing high-performing teams in an Agile environment.
This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days per week in our Barcelona office.
First 90 Days
30 days – Get familiar with Sage's technology stack, architecture, and team structure. Meet your engineers, product and architecture peers, and begin shadowing delivery processes.
60 days – Begin driving sprint execution, establish team rituals, provide technical leadership on key features or services, and start owning delivery outcomes.
90 days – Shape roadmap delivery in close collaboration with product and begin mentoring engineers and business analysts to elevate delivery standards.
Meet the Team
You'll report to the Director of Engineering and lead a cross-functional squad based in Barcelona, working closely with product managers, architects, cloud ops, QAs, BAs and engineering counterparts across the UK, Europe, the US, and South Africa. Your team consists of engineers (from graduate to senior) and business analysts. You'll also collaborate with product enablement and cloud ops to ensure solutions are scalable and supportable.

Qualifications
Strong software engineering background with experience in Java
Ruby on Rails experience is not required, but a strong willingness to learn and work with it is essential
Experience designing and delivering complex, high-scale solutions, APIs and web services
Familiarity with frontend frameworks such as React
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred; GCP or Azure); ideally AWS services like ECS, Lambda, DynamoDB, RDS, S3, SQS/SNS
Experience managing and developing technical teams, including coaching and performance reviews
Excellent problem-solving, estimation, and communication skills
Comfortable working in Agile environments and across global teams
Fluent in English; Spanish is a plus
Computer Science degree (or equivalent qualification); contribution to open-source projects is a bonus
