Open Position: PhD Position in Gravitational Waves Physics
IFAE is inviting applications for a PhD position in Gravitational Waves Physics. The position is part of the IFAE Gravitational Waves Group and involves detector-related activities, physics analysis of LIGO–Virgo data, and training opportunities within an international research environment.
Responsibilities
* Involvement in detector-related activities, including LV data characterization, optical simulation studies, and monitoring stray light inside LV optical cavities with new photo sensors in ultra-high vacuum conditions.
* Participation in physics analysis of LIGO–Virgo data in one or more research topics described by the group (e.G., compact binary coalescence searches, mass/spin spectra, dark matter candidates, axion-like signals in continuous GW signals).
* Development of data analysis methods, including deep learning and robust statistics, and contributions to multi-messenger astronomy studies.
* Active involvement in GW detector R&D and detector simulations;
collaboration with CERNon ET design aspects as applicable.
* Participation in training and networking activities, including opportunities for extended stays at international research centers in Europe and the USA.
Qualifications
* Holding a Master’s degree in Physics, Astrophysics, or a related field (to be completed by contract start date).
* Holding a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics or a related field.
* Fundamental knowledge of Gravitation;
programming experience (Python or C++) is advantageous;
prior GW physics experience is appreciated.
* Strong physics background, pro-active attitude, and good communication skills.
* Fluency in written and spoken English.
Selection and Evaluation
* Evaluation criteria include University Records (50 points), Computing Skills (20 points), Physics analysis experience (20 points), and English communication skills (10 points).
* A Selection Committee will evaluate applications;
shortlisted candidates may be invited to present online and answer questions.
Offer and Contract
* Full-time contract (40 h/week) for 4 years as a predoctoral position corresponding to a PhD student.
* Salary proportional to experience and qualifications within the established category range.
* Opportunity to work on interesting experimental science with potential for personal growth and learning.
* Expected to join IFAE as soon as possible.
