Context And Mission: The Atmospheric Composition group from the Earth Sciences department at the BSC-CNS seeks a postdoctoral researcher to advance process representation in the BSC atmospheric chemistry model MONARCH, to investigate the role of natural biogenic and soil sources on atmospheric chemistry and air quality, especially biogenic VOC and NO/HONO emissions. MONARCH uses MEGAN to describe biogenic emissions. The objective is to improve and constrain the estimates of natural emissions and to understand the chemistry associated with them by comparing different state-of-the-art gas-phase chemical mechanisms and SOA schemes on key species (e.G., HCHO, O3, SOA). The candidate will join the AC-CHEM team and work in a collaborative environment with strong links to other researchers in the AC group and the Earth Sciences department. The successful candidate will have opportunities for training in coding, data analysis, scientific and project writing, and project management through formal courses organized by the Education and Training team and Human Resources, and participation in regular seminars.
Key Duties
* Refine the representation of biogenic VOC emissions, e.G., with up-to-date biogenic emission models (e.G., MEGAN3) and recent vegetation input information (e.G., LAI).
* Compare different soil NO/HONO emission datasets with MEGAN estimates.
* Evaluate natural emissions with MONARCH using surface and satellite observations.
* Assess the impact of refined emissions on different state-of-the-art gas-phase chemical mechanisms and SOA schemes.
* Lead the preparation of scientific publications and present the research at scientific workshops and conferences.
Requirements
* Education: A PhD in environmental engineering or similar.
* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience: 5+ years of experience in air quality modelling development;
programming and code development (Python and/or R);
Unix/Linux environments;
fluent English (written and spoken);
proven ability to publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
* Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience: Experience with revision control systems (e.G., SVN or Git);
experience with GIS data and tools.
* Competences: Very good interpersonal and communication skills;
ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under deadlines;
ability to work independently and in a team.
Conditions
* The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department.
* Full-time contract (37.5h/week) with a highly stimulating environment, state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, and relocation support.
* Duration: Open-ended contract tied to project activity and budget.
* Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st December per the collective agreement.
