Context And Mission
The Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES) led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes develops, among other research tools, global climate models to perform a range of climate experiments at frontier (storm and eddy-resolving) spatial resolutions. The Department is looking for a climate scientist to assist in the evaluation of the Digital Twin for Climate Adaptation based on IFS-NEMO-SI3, with which the BSC contributes to the Destination Earth (DestinE) European initiative to deliver cutting-edge future projections of unprecedented accuracy. The successful candidate will contribute to demonstrating the added value of these next-generation simulations through systematic evaluation and comparison with established reference ensembles, including CMIP and CORDEX. This work will support the scientific assessment of improvements in climate representation across scales and provide scientific guidance for the design and development of the next phase of Digital Twin simulations, helping to inform future model configurations and experimental strategies.
Key Duties
* Perform a thorough evaluation of DestinE models’ performance with respect to atmospheric and ocean circulation, major teleconnection patterns, and air–sea interactions across several key regions, such as the northern hemisphere mid-latitudes, the polar regions, and the tropical Pacific.
* Establish robust comparisons of the novel km-scale global climate simulations with large ensembles of CMIP and CORDEX simulations.
* Assist also in the evaluation of simulation tests performed in the tuning process of future IFS-NEMO model versions.
* Lead scientific publications, project reports, and presentations, and actively engage with internal BSC teams and external partners within the Destination Earth framework
Requirements
* Education
o PhD degree in meteorology, oceanography or any related discipline
o A PhD and work experience in meteorology/oceanography will be considered an asset
* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Advanced knowledge in high-level computer languages (especially FORTRAN) and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments, scripting languages (bash, Python …) and debugging tools.
o Experience performing process-based analysis with climate model outputs and observations. Experience analysing high-resolution data will be an asset.
o Experience in using HPC architectures and parallel programming will be valued.
o Experience with version control systems SVN or Git) will be valued.
o Fluency in English
* Competences
o Reliable and constructive interpersonal skills
o Excellent written and verbal communication skills
o Ability to take initiatives, prioritise and work under set deadlines
o Ability to work both independently and within a team
