Alpega Group is looking for a VP of Data for the group, reporting directly to the CEO, working across the product portfolio. This role ideally will be based in Barcelona (hybrid) with the option to be based across Europe.

ABOUT THE ROLE
Alpega operates a pan‑European transport platform where data is generated across multiple products, markets, and systems. The company’s ability to scale, differentiate, and operate efficiently increasingly depends on how well this data is governed, integrated, and turned into intelligence. The Vice President of Data owns this end to end.
This is a hands‑on, transformational leadership role responsible for establishing a coherent data governance model in a distributed data‑creation environment, building reliable data pipelines into a central platform, and converting data into internal insights and customer‑facing, data‑driven capabilities. The role also owns Alpega’s data science and algorithmic capabilities and acts as the company’s pragmatic AI champion, ensuring advanced techniques are applied where they deliver measurable value.
Core Responsibilities
1. Data Governance in a Distributed Data Model
* Define and implement a practical data governance model where multiple systems generate the same categories of data.
* Establish clear ownership, definitions, and accountability for core data domains.
* Ensure consistency, quality, and trust in data while preserving product and engineering velocity.
* Balance local autonomy with global standards across products and regions.
2. Data Pipelines and Central Data Platform
* Own end‑to‑end data pipelines from source systems into a central data repository.
* Standardise ingestion, transformation, validation, and monitoring across the platform.
* Ensure the data platform is scalable, reliable, and suitable for both analytics and production use.
* Eliminate fragile, manual, and duplicated data flows.
3. Insights and Productized Data Capabilities
* Enable internal reporting and analytics for leadership, product, commercial, and operational teams.
* Establish and maintain a single, trusted set of core business metrics across the company.
* Partner with Product and Engineering to deliver customer‑facing, data‑driven features embedded into the platform.
* Move data from descriptive reporting to actionable, production‑grade intelligence.
4. Algorithms and Data Science
* Own Alpega’s data science function and algorithmic capabilities.
* Design, operate, and continuously improve core algorithms combining:
o Behavioral signals
o Transactional and network data
o Static and reference data
* Ensure algorithms are explainable, monitored, and production‑grade.
* Work closely with Product and Engineering to embed algorithmic decisioning into live workflows.
* Define clear ownership, performance metrics, and lifecycle management for algorithmic systems.
5. AI Enablement
* Act as Alpega’s AI and algorithm champion, focused on applied, practical use.
* Enable AI to support:
o Engineering productivity and software quality
o Faster product insight generation and learning cycles
o Selective, high‑impact intelligence capabilities in the platform
* Establish guardrails to ensure responsible, secure, and effective use of AI technologies.
6. Leadership and Operating Model
* Build and lead a high‑impact data organization spanning data engineering, analytics, and data science.
* Work closely with Product, Engineering, Commercial, and Operations teams across Europe.
* Operate effectively in a distributed, multicultural environment.
* Travel regularly to support teams; Barcelona is the preferred base location.

* Senior data leadership experience in a complex B2B SaaS, platform, or marketplace environment.
* Strong background in data governance, data platforms, and analytics.
* Proven experience owning and scaling production‑grade data science and algorithmic systems.
* Ability to translate complex data and algorithmic concepts into business and product outcomes.
* Hands‑on mindset with a bias for execution and accountability.
* Experience applying AI in real‑world engineering or product contexts.
