Development & Communications Coordinator

The Prince William Sound Science Center is an Alaska-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to advance community resilience and the understanding and sustainable use of ecosystems. For over 35 years, PWSSC has been dedicated to providing tangible benefits to coastal communities through scientific research, applied science, inquiry-based STEAM education, and meaningful demonstration projects. PWSSC has boots on the ground, boats in the water, and students in the field year-round. Our work fosters community engagement, stewardship of natural resources, and lasting connections between people, science, and the environment.

Role Responsibilities:

We are seeking a dynamic, detail-oriented, and highly organized Development & Communications Coordinator to join our team. This position is responsible for coordinating fundraising events and campaigns, managing incoming donations, generating and editing communications content across multiple platforms, and overseeing the ordering and inventory of promotional items, among other important duties.

In addition to carrying out established fundraising strategies, this role is also a key source of creative ideas for new and effective ways to raise funds and implement those methods. The ideal candidate is comfortable working under deadlines, enjoys bringing people together, is willing to refine practices after individual or team reflection, and excels at juggling multiple priorities while ensuring that all development and communications activities are executed with professionalism and creativity.

Our annual Copper River Nouveau gala is an annual highlight for local and traveling participants and is an important source of unrestricted funds that help advance PWSSC’s mission. As development and communications coordinator, you lead most aspects of this successful, high-impact event. This typically includes overseeing volunteers and paid assistants while also connecting with auction item donors, sponsors, and attendees.

Key Responsibilities

* Plan, organize, and execute fundraising events and campaigns, including:
o The Copper River Nouveau in-person gala and online auction (includes extensive solicitation of items and vacation packages for donation, direct donor/attendee contact, and more).
o Prospect generation, prospect analysis, and generation of donor lists.
o Annual fall online auction.
o Pick.Click.Give. campaign.
o End-of-year annual appeal.
o Support our current multiyear general support fundraising campaign.
* Identify and develop new and innovative fundraising opportunities and create implementation plans.
* Serve as event coordinator for on-site and off-site events as appropriate.
* Manage grant reporting, annual mail campaigns, and donation receipt acknowledgments.
* Work with the finance team to reconcile donation tracking.
* Generate accurate donor lists for a variety of reporting needs.
* Support development team and PWSSC leadership with donor engagement activities.
* Work with event software platforms such as Greater Giving.

Membership Contributions & Donor Management

* Enter donor and membership data into Salesforce in coordination with the bookkeeper and administrative assistant.
* Maintain and update donor profiles.
* Donor/sponsor invoicing, donation tracking, thank-you letters and tax receipts.
* Track annual contributions and generate donor listings for the annual report.
* Generate and edit original content for fundraising-related communications across print, email, website, and social media platforms.
* Define and document processes for donor communications, including thank-you letters and stewardship materials.
* Serve as editor and content developer for the Breakwater monthly e-newsletter.
* Serve as editor, content contributor, fundraiser, and distributor for the annual publication Delta Sound Connections.
* Maintain accurate and current email and mailing lists for fundraising and outreach.
* Create compelling social media posts that support fundraising campaigns and highlight donor impact.
* Submit advertising content to The Cordova Times and local radio stations.
* Write and post blog content; update the organization’s website as needed (WordPress).
* Work with contract designers as required.
* Work with digital marketing and communication programs such as Constant Contact.

Promotional & Merchandise Management

* Oversee ordering, inventory, and display of gift shop merchandise.
* Coordinate organizational booths at fairs, festivals, and symposiums in collaboration with administrative, research, and education staff.
Candidate Qualifications:

Qualifications

* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in nonprofit development, communications, event planning, or related field.
* 2+ years of experience in fundraising, event coordination, communications, or donor relations.
* Strong organizational and project management skills, with a proven ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience creating and editing content.
* Familiarity with Salesforce as a donor management software.
* Experience with Greater Giving or other similar platforms for online and silent auctions.
* Experience with the digital marketing and communications platform Constant Contact or similar.
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
* Experience with social media content creation and basic graphic design tools (e.g., Canva).
* Practice updating and modifying WordPress-based websites.
* Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, donors, consultants, and community partners.
* Commitment to the mission and values of the Prince William Sound Science Center.
* Some evenings and weekends required for events.
* Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and move it from one location to another for event setup/takedown and merchandise handling.
* Occasional travel within or outside of Alaska.
