About the School
Founded in 2006, the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC) is the premier centre for language and area studies in Hong Kong and the region. It offers undergraduate majors in Global and Area Studies, Japanese Studies, and Korean Studies, and 13 language programmes.
The Role
* Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for two 3‑year terms.
* Develop and uphold the highest international standards of research and teaching.
* Optimise the deployment of human, financial, and other resources.
* Cultivate an inclusive and vibrant intellectual community that attracts top‑tier scholars and students.
* Expand the School’s international collaborations and networks.
Qualifications and Qualities
* PhD in a related field and stature equivalent to a full or chair professor.
* Distinguished record of academic achievements and international recognition.
* Leading researcher with a deep focus on at least one region of the world.
* Ability to teach, conduct, and publish research in English and at least one of the 13 languages offered by SMLC.
* Experience supervising teaching units with language staff.
* Proven leadership and university‑level administration experience.
* Strong international network and ability to secure research funding.
* Effective interpersonal communication skills and high integrity.
* Willingness to represent the discipline and School in the broader community.
Compensation and Benefits
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience, contract‑end gratuity, contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 15 % of basic salary, annual leave, professional leave, medical benefits, free access to on‑campus gyms and libraries, and housing benefits as applicable.
