What We’re Looking For
We are looking for an experienced Optical Payload Architect to take technical leadership in the definition and delivery of next‑generation Earth Observation (EO) payloads. This role is central to the success of our spacecraft missions, acting as the technical authority for optical payloads and ensuring required performance is achieved within cost, schedule, and risk constraints.
Key Responsibilities
* Act as technical authority for optical payloads within the spacecraft manufacturer.
* Define system‑level requirements for EO optical payloads.
* Lead and oversee payload procurement activities and manage subcontractors.
* Evaluate subcontractor designs at system level, ensuring compliance with performance and standards.
* Drive end‑to‑end payload performance, from early design phases through in‑orbit operations.
* Contribute to payload performance modelling, analysis, and validation activities.
Requirements
* Recognized engineering degree (Master’s or PhD) in Optical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
* Proven experience in payload procurement and subcontractor management.
* Strong knowledge of optical imaging principles, detectors, and calibration techniques.
* Experience with payload performance modelling and analysis tools such as Zemax, Code V, MATLAB, Python, and STK.
* Familiarity with space mission lifecycles and applicable standards (ECSS, NASA, ISO).
* Advanced knowledge of Python.
* Expert‑level knowledge of ECSS standards within Defence & Security environments.
* Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership skills.
* Professional fluency in English.
Desired (not indispensable)
* Experience with high‑resolution optical imagers and/or hyperspectral instruments.
* Knowledge of on‑ground and in‑orbit calibration techniques.
* Previous role as Payload Technical Authority, Chief Engineer, or Architect.
* Experience across multiple missions from Phase0/A feasibility studies through to in‑orbit operations.
