The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing centre in Spain, hosting MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe. It research, develop and manage information technologies to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D in computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences).
Context And Mission
The Earth Sciences Department of BSC‑ES, led by Prof Francisco Doblas‑Reyes, develops global climate models. The Department is looking for a research engineer or scientist to assist in the continuous development and evaluation of the Digital Twin for Climate Adaptation based on IFS‑NEMO‑SI3.
Key Duties
* Modify and test several model features to ensure that the IFS‑NEMO‑SI3 model produces physically sound climate simulations
* Collaborate with members of the Earth Sciences Department to test the latest model and workflow developments, debug potential model errors, and ensure that experiments are performed efficiently
* Conduct numerical simulations for model tuning and spin‑up
* Contribute to the scientific assessment of the IFS‑NEMO‑SI3 and other climate DT simulations
Requirements
* Education
o Bachelor degree in computer sciences, applied mathematics or physics, or any related discipline
o A PhD and work experience in meteorology/oceanography will be considered an asset
* Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
o Advanced knowledge in high‑level computer languages (especially FORTRAN) and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments, scripting languages (bash, Python…) and debugging tools.
o Experience working with numerical models of ocean, atmosphere and other Earth system components.
o Experience in using HPC architectures and parallel programming will be valued.
o Experience with version control systems (e.g., SVN or Git) will be valued.
o Fluency in English

Conditions
* Position located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
* Full‑time contract (35 h/week) with flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, relocation support
* Open‑ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
* Holidays: 22 days of holidays + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
* Salary: competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience, according to the cost of living in Barcelona
