MSCA-PF: Joint application at the University of Granada. Department of Drawing.

Professor Paz Tornero Lorenzo, from the Department of Drawing at the University of Granada, welcomes postdoctoral candidates interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) in 2026 at this University. Please note that applicants must comply with the Mobility Rule (for more information about the 2026 call, please consult this link ).

Brief description of the institution:

The University of Granada (UGR), founded in 1531, is one of the largest and most important universities in Spain. With more than 57,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and almost 7,000 members of staff, the UGR offers 97 undergraduate degrees, 157 master’s degrees (7 of which are double degrees) and 28 doctoral programmes via its 124 departments and nearly 50 centres. Accordingly, the UGR offers one of the most extensive and diverse ranges of higher education programmes in Spain.

The UGR has been awarded the \"Human Resources Excellence in Research (HRS4R)\", which reflects the institution’s commitment to continuously improve its human resource policies in line with the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. The UGR is also internationally renowned for its excellence in diverse research fields and ranked among the top Spanish universities in a variety of ranking criteria, such as national R&D projects, fellowships awarded, publications, and international funding.

The UGR is one of the few Spanish Universities listed in the Shanghai Top 500 ranking - Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The 2025 edition of the ARWU places the UGR in 301-400th position in the world and as the 3-8 highest ranked University in Spain, reaffirming its position as an institution at the forefront of national and international research. From the perspective of specialist areas in the ARWU rankings, the UGR is outstanding in Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence and Dentistry & Oral Sciences (ranked between 51st-75th position), Computer Science & Engineering, Education and Hospitality & Tourism Management (between 76-100th position), and in the areas of Food Science & Technology and Business Administration (between 101-150th position). A little lower in the ranking, the UGR also stands out in the areas of Earth Sciences, Law, Management, Nursing, Psychology and Statistics, in which the UGR is positioned in the 151-200th position.

Internationally, the University of Granada is firmly committed to its participation in the calls of the Framework Programme of the European Union. For the duration of the previous Framework Programme, Horizon 2020, the UGR obtained a total of 124 projects with a total funding of more than €30 million. For the current Framework Programme, Horizon Europe, the UGR has obtained 136 projects, so far, with a total funding of more than €38 million.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group:

The University of Granada (UGR) is one of Spain’s leading research universities and a major European institution with strong internationalisation and extensive participation in competitive research programmes. The proposed fellowship will be hosted at the Department of Drawing, which provides an interdisciplinary environment for artistic research and practice‑based methodologies.

The host research environment explores the intersection of art, science and technology through experimental audiovisual practices, sound art, installation and real‑time audiovisual systems. Current research activities investigate how scientific and technological processes can be translated into sonic and visual structures through strategies such as data sonification, multichannel spatial sound and generative audiovisual systems, contributing to new approaches in artistic research and knowledge production.

The research context promotes interdisciplinary collaboration between artists, researchers and professionals from fields including visual arts, music, architecture, audiovisual technology and scientific research. The host has experience in international artistic research contexts and collaborations with scientific laboratories, cultural institutions and museums of science and technology.

Recent research achievements include the project “Practice‑led Research in Art and Science: Exploration, Collaboration and Transformative Methodologies in the Creation of Sound Works and Audiovisual Installations” (FCT-23-19092), funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) under the Art, Science, Technology and Society programme (ACTS), involving collaborations with institutions such as Spanish Radio and Television Corporation (RTVE), the Synthetic Biology and Biosystems Control Lab (UPV) and the National Museum of Science and Technology (MUNCYT).

The fellowship will be developed within the activities of the HUMA Artists Research Group, which focuses on inter‑ and transdisciplinary artistic research at the intersection of art, science and technology (https://humaartistsgroup.com).

This research line focuses on practice‑based artistic research at the intersection of art, science and technology, exploring how scientific processes and datasets can be translated into immersive audiovisual environments. It offers a flexible framework for postdoctoral researchers to develop interdisciplinary projects linking artistic practice, scientific knowledge and technological experimentation.

The research examines how experimental data from fields such as biology, microbiology, physics or environmental monitoring can be transformed into sonic and visual structures through strategies including data sonification, algorithmic translation and audiovisual mapping, enabling new ways of interpreting and communicating scientific phenomena.

Within this context, the fellowship supports the development of innovative approaches that combine artistic experimentation, scientific data and technological systems. Potential research directions may involve spatial sound environments, real‑time audiovisual performance, generative systems, audiovisual installations or hybrid artistic‑scientific devices, depending on the candidate’s interests and expertise.

The research contributes to current debates on artistic research, Art‑Science collaboration and experimental media practices, exploring how creative processes can expand the perception and communication of complex scientific knowledge.

Expected outcomes include artistic productions (such as sound works, audiovisual installations or live audiovisual performances), critical reflection on practice‑based methodologies, and dissemination through exhibitions, academic publications and international research networks.

The project welcomes postdoctoral researchers working in sound art, experimental media, artistic research, creative technologies, audiovisual practices or Art‑Science collaboration, interested in developing innovative interdisciplinary approaches.
