Within Azure Data, our big data analytics team offers products enabling data engineers and scientists to extract insights from all data types—structured, semi-structured, and unstructured. We are working to unify these products into Azure Synapse Analytics to simplify and accelerate value realization.
We are hiring a Senior Applied Scientist for the Gray Systems Lab (GSL), an applied research group within the Azure Data CTO office. GSL addresses challenges in open-source and proprietary technologies related to analytics, cloud, AI, and storage systems. We develop reliable, scalable, high-performance distributed systems for data analytics on Azure, publish in top conferences, and contribute to open-source projects. Our team has contributed extensively to academic research and developed technologies impacting significant Microsoft revenues and costs. Our research areas include GPU analytics, container technologies, graph databases, infrastructure and models for LLMs and data science, machine learning for systems, among others. Qualifications
* Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field, with extensive experience OR Master's Degree in the same fields with relevant experience OR Doctorate in the same fields with relevant experience.
* Extensive experience with programming languages such as C#, Java, Python, C++, or Rust.
* Experience publishing academic papers as a lead author or key contributor.
Responsibilities
* Build collaborative relationships across product and business groups, providing expertise and technology to create impact. Engage in activities like technology transfer, standards participation, patent filing, white papers, tool development, or consulting. Publish research to generate intellectual property.
* Translate research into production by applying long-term efforts to meet immediate product needs. Collaborate with researchers and development teams to ensure cutting-edge technology benefits products practically, aligning with business goals.
* Work independently to create product impact by identifying and applying research-backed solutions to significant business problems, and publish research to enhance intellectual property.
* Develop deep expertise in complex or ambiguous domains, sharing knowledge of industry trends and technological advances to inform product development and strategy.
* Analyze business and product requirements, leveraging state-of-the-art research and solutions to meet goals. Develop strategies to resolve team or feature-level challenges and guide data usage for problem-solving.
