Job Opportunity: Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for a Construction Underwriter to join our Property team in Madrid. The Construction Underwriter will be responsible for developing and expanding new business opportunities, analyzing exposures according to BHSI’s risk quality and confidence framework, negotiating fair insurance conditions and deploying necessary capacity for all type of construction projects, including civil works, buildings, power generation, oil & gas, mining, etc. A good understanding of engineering concepts, risk management capabilities and strong business acumen is necessary to achieve our team objective of being a reputable Construction team with an outperforming combined ratio. We are seeking an individual with a solid background in underwriting Construction business, who strives for excellence in every area from analyzing risks to delivering customer and broker service. You should be comfortable working closely with the Claims team, underwriters and Risk Control engineers from across the broader team. Good data and file management skills are required. In addition, necessary character, relationship building and negotiating skills to help lead and further build a profitable book of business are of the upmost importance. The successful candidate will be focused on a positive customer experience, while maintaining sound underwriting discipline. Duties & Responsibilities: Underwrite and grow the Construction book of business profitably within the BHSI risk appetite Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships Underwrite Construction projects (EAR, CAR) while ensuring appropriate analysis and documentation Evaluate and underwrite risks related to civil works, construction, and large infrastructures and all types of industrial risks including emerging risks. Analyze technical documentation, reports Participate in the development of products and technical proposals. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity and profitability Contribute towards the further development of Construction underwriting at BHSI both in Spain and globally Collaborate to develop and strengthen the Spanish branch operations beyond the regular underwriting activities Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 2 years of underwriting experience in Construction (both project and annual policies), technical underwriting or industrial risks. Existing broker and customer relationships, or the experience and ability to develop strong broker and customer relationships quickly Strong underwriting acumen Experience and strong understanding of policy forms, including broker manuscripts Experience marketing to specialized brokers Strong collaboration and team building skills Strong communication skills including negotiation, communications, and presentation experience Good understanding of natural catastrophe peril modelling and pricing for multi-year construction policies Analytical mindset: approach problems in a logical, structured, and data-driven manner; being curious, asking questions, and seeking out the best data and analytical tools. A technical background in fields such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, or related disciplines is highly valued.
