About the role
Nature Neuroscience is seeking an Associate or Senior Editor to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with the editorial team, manage manuscripts, and support the publication of high‑quality neuroscience research.
The successful candidate will report to the Chief Editor, Nature Neuroscience.
Role Responsibilities Manuscripts
* Select and reject manuscripts for publication, within the framework of current editorial policy
* Provide cover for absent colleagues or gaps in editorial expertise
* Allocate manuscripts to other team members, where agreed
* Build and maintain the reputation of Nature Neuroscience in the scientific community by fostering strong relationships with researchers
* Take responsibility for developing a broad subject area, where agreed
* Define topics for Perspective and Review Articles, assess proposals from potential authors, handle resulting manuscripts, and improve them through effective editing
Training and Development
* Support team members in handling manuscripts and participate in the development of the editorial team
* Train and supervise new editors during probation, including recommending whether probation has been successfully completed (Senior Editor)
* Take responsibility for aspects of team training and personal development, where agreed (Senior Editor)
* Contribute to planning effective publishing strategies for authors and input into technological and operational developments
Relationships with Other Departments
* Develop and maintain productive relationships with other staff, including Nature journal editors, editorial assistants, and relevant departments such as Author Services
* Coordinate and collaborate with commercial colleagues, provide advice to marketing and advertising departments, and make constructive suggestions for sponsored projects
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
* Educated to PhD level (or equivalent) in the field of Neuroscience
* Postdoctoral or research experience in neuroscience is an advantage
* Previous editorial experience is desirable but not essential
* Strong interest and passion for neuroscience and scientific research
* Excellent time management and prioritization skills
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Commitment to communicating scientific ideas clearly
