Our client, a renowned European Institution in Seville, is the European Union’s science hub.
The organisation plays a vital role in supporting EU policymaking through rigorous, high-quality research across key areas that directly impact the lives of all Europeans, from AI to territorial transformation, clean industry, and fiscal policy.
We are seeking a skilled
Data Scientist, that will join the “Green Expertise for Investments” team and who will support the development of a geographic information system to analyse decarbonisation data reported by companies in energy-intensive industries in their climate Transition Plans (the concept is described in this short paper: JRC Publications Repository - Credible company transition plans for climate change mitigation: a geographical dependency assessment).
Contract type offer: Freelancer
Location: Seville, working from the Institution’s comfortable offices.
What will be the role of the Data Scientist?
The main tasks to be carried out include the upscaling of a database of climate Transition Plans, the further upgrading of the GIS tool and its use for the analysis of information collected (e.g. developing a semi-automated process to scale up the extraction from corporate reports, explore and propose options to scale up the database from an EU centric approach to a global approach, create visual representations on maps...).
Upscale a transition plan database, and analyse information collected using a GIS tool Extract, clean, and structure information (emission reductions/sustainability targets, actions/ decarbonisation levers, investments information, etc.) from companies’ Climate Transition Plans (CSRD reports) at company and plant level when possible Develop a semi-automated process to scale up the extraction from an increasing number of PDFs climate reports over time (leveraging AI LMM and machine learning) Conduct data provider analysis to complement the dataset with publicly available data (e.g. Climate Arc, IEA, Climate trace, press released) or private databases (e.g. Asset Impact, Orbis, MSCI, Sustainalytics, Clarity AI, CDP) Explore and propose options to scale up the database from an EU centric approach to a Integral approach Design and implement routines and procedures for updating and backup the dataset Propose and implement IT solution to connect the database to the existing preliminary version of the GIS analytical tool Perform analysis at corporate, sectoral or geographical level (local, region, country) to identify trends, patterns, and statistical insights (using data analysis tools and technique) to provide evidence for financing decisions by private actors and for (EU or national) public policymaking related to the EU industrial transition, infrastructure planning, sectoral financing needs, etc. Create visual representations on maps (e.g. with GIS, Tableau, or Power BI)
Supporting duties: develop further the GIS analytical tool
Based on the analysis performed, propose new features for improving the GIS online tool and implement them Update the underlying data sources included in the GIS tool (EU ETS installation CO2 emissions, electricity grid maps, potential of hydrogen production in EU, regional availability of scrap, etc.)
