Commissioning Engineer – Substation Automation & Control (Europe-Based / Remote)
Are you a hands‑on commissioning expert who thrives in high‑voltage utility environments? Do you know substation automation protocols inside and out?
We are partnering with a pioneering global energy technology company that is fundamentally reshaping how power grids operate across Europe. They manufacture advanced power flow control solutions and modular FACTS devices that allow utility operators to optimize their existing transmission networks.
Due to massive project pipelines across the EU, they are seeking a (Senior) Commissioning Engineer to serve as the technical authority for end‑to‑end site delivery.
The Setup
* Location: Home‑based anywhere in Europe (Remote).
* Travel: Up to 50% travel to high‑voltage transmission substations across Europe (with occasional global travel).
* The Vibe: High autonomy. You aren't just swapping standard components; you are executing complex, first‑of‑its‑kind grid integration projects.
What You’ll Be Doing
* Hands‑On Execution: Leading the planning, coordination, and execution of secondary systems Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) in live transmission substations.
* SCADA & Automation Integration: Designing, configuring, and executing customer‑witnessed testing for SCADA systems, HMIs, and substation control infrastructure.
* Site Engineering: Generating and reviewing Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs/ITRs), managing site configurations, and resolving complex technical field issues on‑site.
* Client Relations: Acting as the primary, customer‑facing technical expert on‑site with major transmission grid operators.
Core Skills & Requirements
We are looking for a true field engineer who brings real‑world utility execution, not just academic modeling or office‑based project coordination.
* Experience: Minimum 3+ years of hands‑on commissioning experience working within high‑voltage transmission, distribution, or utility‑scale renewable connection substations.
* Protocol Expertise: Deep, practical experience configuring and testing substation control systems and communication protocols. You must have direct exposure to IEC 61850 (Client/Server), and familiarity with IEC 60870‑5‑101/104 or DNP3 is highly preferred.
* The Toolkit: Proficiency with standard network engineering diagnostics (e.g., Wireshark, PuTTY) and vendor configuration tools for protection relays/IEDs.
* Education: Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a closely related power systems discipline.
* Language: Fluency in English is essential; additional European languages are a major plus.
* The Right Fit: Comfortable working independently at heights and within highly energized, complex multi‑vendor HV substation environments.
Nice‑to‑Haves
* Direct experience commissioning or supporting physical FACTS devices (e.g., STATCOMs, SSSCs, or shunt/series compensation equipment).
* Strong background in primary plant commissioning or protection relay testing.
