Pre-Doctoral Research Position (PhD): Flow Dynamics Research to Optimize Extracorporeal Circuits
BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center is conducting a project in fetal surgery and therapy, developing an artificial placenta involving animal experimentation. We seek an enthusiastic individual to join as a pre-doctoral researcher (PhD) in a multidisciplinary project, in collaboration with the Department of Fluid Mechanics at UPC.
The position is primarily funded by STEP FI grants, and selection depends on funding resolution. Candidates interested in other funding sources are encouraged to apply and specify their interests.
Context
BCNatal | Fetal Medicine Research Center, led by Prof. Eduard Gratacós, is a leading multidisciplinary research center in perinatal and fetal medicine, recognized for excellence by the Spanish government. It aims to find solutions for perinatal diseases.
Job Description
We seek a motivated pre-doctoral researcher to study flow dynamics in extracorporeal systems for premature infants, focusing on optimizing circulation within a Liquid Incubator system, using experimental measurements, CFD simulations, and AI analytics to develop real-time monitoring, numerical models, and digital twins.
Key Responsibilities
1. Validate and calibrate sensors and test new types.
2. Create a monitoring system for continuous data acquisition.
3. Conduct CFD studies to develop physics-based models matching experimental data.
4. Perform experiments and simulations to understand patient adaptation over time.
5. Develop signal processing and AI tools for anomaly detection and prediction.
6. Integrate results to develop a digital twin for device and protocol optimization.
Requirements
* Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, with specialization in Fluid Dynamics or related fields.
* Independent, proactive working style.
* Experience with sensor setup, calibration, and real-time data recording.
* Strong practical lab and data analysis skills.
* Experience with CFD software (ANSYS, OpenFoam, etc.).
* Programming skills in Matlab, Python, R, etc., for AI and statistical modeling.
* Preferred: knowledge of hemodynamics or non-Newtonian fluids.
The position offers a unique opportunity at the intersection of biomedical engineering, computational modeling, and experimental research, contributing to neonatal healthcare technologies. Applicants must meet specific criteria to qualify for the STEP grant, including EU nationality, academic grades, and recent PhD completion, with relevant documentation required.
What We Offer
* Permanent contract, 37.5 hours/week.
* On-site work with one remote day per week.
