Overview
The Tax Engine team is hiring a Sr. Indirect Tax expert with deep Brazil and/or Europe expertise - in particular Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain - to join our Global Tax Calculation Services team based in Barcelona.
The Global Tax Calculation Services Program is comprised of tax professionals and software engineers that are responsible for providing end-to-end global transaction tax calculation solutions (sales and use taxes, value-added taxes, goods and services taxes, and other consumption taxes).
The individual in this role will contribute with critical tax research and classification work for Brazil’s complex Indirect Tax landscape and for Europe VAT product and services taxability research, taking ownership on end-to-end cross‑functional tax‑related projects and process improvements. This position will work closely with local business partners and members of the tax department providing guidance and support to Global Product Classification. The role also requires fluent communication with Product Classification Specialists to provide support on their specific needs to be incorporated into the technical solutions.
This position is office‑based. Amazon encourages open communication about unique needs for flexible arrangements.
Key Job Responsibilities
Supporting and maintaining local and global Indirect Tax content across Europe
Conducting comprehensive ICMS tax research across all 27 Brazilian states, including intrastate and interstate rate scenarios
Determining CST (Tax Situation Code) and cClassTrib (Tax Classification Code) combinations as mandatory inputs for Brazilian government Tax Calculator API
Supporting dual tax regime operations during the 2026‑2032 transition period in Brazil
Supporting and providing ongoing maintenance and enhancements to tax calculation software
Translating complex tax legislation into technical requirements for Engineering, Applied Science, and Product teams
Providing support to the end‑to‑end Global transaction tax calculation solutions for a broad array of products and services
Supporting internal and external audits
Providing technical advice on indirect tax rates applicable to Amazon’s catalogue based on the research of tax laws, regulations and jurisdiction changes
Supporting local business partners and tax department members with decisions on product taxability matters
Participating in team operational excellence programs and process improvements
Actively participate in selected projects throughout their life‑cycle
Basic Qualifications
5+ years of Brazilian Indirect Tax experience or EU VAT experience working in Big 4 advisory firm, law firm, or multi‑national tax department
Bachelor's degree in Tax, Accounting, Law, Economics, Business Administration or related field
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and applications at an advanced level
Preferred Qualifications
Indirect Tax knowledge (ICMS, IPI, PIS and COFINS)
Experience with Brazilian Tax Reform (Complementary Law 214/2025) – CBS, IBS, IS implementation
Experience maintaining and operating transaction tax calculation software (e.g. Vertex)
Experience in tax content development, rule creation, or tax research management for technology platforms
Fluency in Portuguese
Proficiency in other languages would be an advantage
