Reuters is seeking a versatile and energetic journalist with story-crafting flair to serve as the bureau’s lead writer in support of its busy breaking news operation. The position, based in the Spanish capital Madrid, requires someone with strong news judgement and attention to both detail and speed who can translate sometimes complex, fast-paced news into concise, readable stories for our media and financial clients around the world. They should demonstrate calm under pressure, a nice turn of phrase and a passion for a gripping yarn told with attention to colour and detail and adherence to Reuters’ founding principles. 
The job spans all sorts of daily news, from corporate to politics and from macroeconomic indicators to general human interest or arts. Spain, the European Union’s fourth-largest economy, has it all in abundance, with many of these stories closely intertwined and requiring a keen eye to tell them right, be they the travails of a minority leftist government seeking to avoid new political crises in a fragmented parliament, separatism in Catalonia, the importance of tourism to the economy or the impact on some of Europe’s largest banks such as Santander and BBVA from all these factors. 
As our **Iberian Lead Writer, **you will: 
- Have the writing and reporting ability to deliver rolling breaking news updates, longer contextual reads on the issues of the day and insightful multimedia features 
- Have outstanding written English, and a flair for producing compelling copy 
- An intuitive ability to cut through the noise and determine the significance of breaking developments 
- Be skilled and proactive in coordinating with colleagues both within the Iberian Breaking News hub, the visuals operation and on specific beats as well as in the wider region 
- Be eager to learn new skills, in text or visual journalism, and use new tools since you would be joining a bureau that has been at the forefront of Reuters innovation 
- Be willing and able to work under tight deadlines and in various shift patterns 
To be our **Iberian Lead Writer**, you will likely have: 
- Fluency in Spanish with an understanding of Portuguese a plus 
- The ability to elevate copy from stringers and mentor more junior members of the team, demonstrating sharp editing skills and a knack for problem-solving- An aptitude for developing contacts 
- A firm grasp of the issues and sectors that make Iberia such a busy news patch and source of fascinating stories
