Description -
Principal Data Scientist – General B2B Pricing
About the Team
We are a team of Economists, Data Scientists, and Software Engineers who develop and operate HP’s global machine learning–based B2B pricing engine — a mission‑critical system that optimizes prices for hundreds of thousands of products daily. We collaborate closely with Product, Sales, Engineering, and Finance to ensure pricing decisions are data‑driven, scalable, and strategically aligned. We are now entering a new phase in our pricing algorithm evolution and seek a Principal Data Scientist to help define and build what comes next.
Role Overview:
The Principal Data Scientist will provide technical and strategic leadership for the future of HP’s pricing intelligence. You will drive the evolution of ML ‑ driven pricing algorithms — moving beyond single‑quote models toward customer‑aware, long‑term value–oriented pricing strategies. This is a hands‑on role spanning modeling, experimentation, and cross‑functional decision‑making.
Key Responsibilities:
Algorithm & Modeling Leadership
- Shape the next generation of HP’s pricing algorithms, incorporating customer behavior, historical interactions, and long‑term value.
- Develop advanced ML models for price response, demand patterns, and customer value estimation.
- Balance model sophistication with interpretability, robustness, and operational constraints.
Data Strategy & Feature Innovation
- Identify and integrate new data sources to strengthen pricing intelligence.
- Lead feature design, validation, and lifecycle improvements to drive continuous model gains.
Experimentation & Causal Evaluation
- Design and guide rigorous experiments to test pricing strategies and algorithm changes.
- Apply state‑of‑the‑art methods in A/B testing, causal inference, and longitudinal impact measurement.
- Translate experimental results into actionable pricing strategy improvements.
Thought Leadership & Cross ‑ Functional Influence
- Act as a trusted technical partner to Product, Sales, Pricing, and Finance stakeholders.
- Communicate modeling rationale, uncertainty, and trade‑offs in clear business terms.
- Mentor data scientists and elevate analytical standards across the team.
Required Qualifications:
- Strong background in machine learning, statistics, and applied modeling.
- Proven experience with pricing or related decision‑science domains.
- Expertise in experimental design, A/B testing, and causal inference.
- Proficiency with SQL, Python, and large‑scale datasets.
- Experience deploying production ML models with engineering partners.
- Demonstrated technical leadership across cross‑functional environments.
Nice to Have
- Experience with B2B or negotiated pricing.
- Familiarity with dynamic pricing, reinforcement learning, or sequential decision‑making.
- Experience with experiments involving repeated customers or delayed outcomes.
- Hands‑on experience with Agentic AI developer tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot).
Why Join Us?
- Influence a global, business‑critical pricing system with real economic impact.
- Tackle complex applied ML and pricing challenges at enterprise scale.
- Shape the long‑term evolution of HP’s pricing intelligence capabilities.
- Join a team with diverse academic and professional backgrounds, including many PhDs, where people are curious, collaborative, and continuously learning from each other.
