Head of Secondary School

JOB PURPOSE
* Lead and manage the strategic development and day to day running of the secondary school
REPORTING TO

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Strategic Planning, Evaluation and the Whole School Development Plan (WSDP)
* Help set an ambitious vision for the future of the school, seeing past what is currently in place
* Effectively evaluative all aspects of the school through various Quality Assurance strategies and identify areas for further development
* Critically draw on past experience, research and the ideas of others to devise imaginative strategies which do have a demonstrable positive impact on the school
* Objectively evaluate the impact of initiatives and decisions and feedback into the WSDP
* Understand the context in which school improvement takes place and live with the complexity that this brings
Curriculum Teaching, Learning and Assessment and Student Progress
* Oversee the development and implementation of the curriculum
* Oversee the standard of teaching, learning and assessment in the secondary school
* Oversee the raising of academic progress of all students in the secondary school
Leadership and management
* Follow through on agreed plans and implement significant institutional change, leading others and working within competing constraints and objectives
* Plan the distribution of resources across the secondary school, including timetabling staff and physical spaces
* Maintain high expectations of others and rigorously hold them accountable to the expectations set out in their job description, while being compassionate and empathetic
* Balance consultation with others alongside your own expertise and research to make effective and efficient decisions
* Identify imaginative or causal links between actions and consequences and is able to synthesize significant amounts of information, in various forms, from a variety of sources in order to find imaginative and effective solutions to problems
* Monitor budgets allocated to direct reports, ensuring expenditure and priorities are in line with the relevant Area Development Plan, the WSDP and the ICs Promise
Community Relationships and Links
* Play a significant role in building relationships with parents. Proactively through high visibility and regular communication and reactively when parents are needing advice, reassurance or intervention.
* Contribute to relevant forums, groups and initiatives within NAE and the IB
* Contribute to actions and initiatives put forward by the Parents Association
* Contribute to audits, evaluations, accreditations and surveys that are undertaken by NAE, NEASC and the IB
* Proactively seek out partnerships and links with schools and organisations, both local and global, that may provide valuable contributions to the education provided by ICs
* Contribute to the ICs Alumni organisation
Recruitment and the Professional Development of Leaders
* Lead the recruitment of staff for the secondary school, including the appointment of Positions of Responsibility
* Lead the Probation process for all new staff in the secondary school
* Put systems and processes in place to ensure that staff work within the letter and the ethos of the policies and practices of the school
* Play a lead role in the performance management of underperforming staff and the investigation of reports of misconduct by staff in the secondary school
* Overall responsibility for the professional development of all staff working in the secondary school
* Proactively develop the leadership competence and confidence of all direct reports, through a coaching approach and an identification of appropriate PD opportunities
* Support the Principal and HR in mapping the Performance Management responsibility matrix for the staff in the secondary school
* Lead direct reports through the Success Factors Professional Development process and through any Performance Mangement issues
Marketing and Admissions
* Evaluate the suitability of student applications to the school
* Meet with prospective parents
* Work with the MAC team to devise and implement the MAC strategy for the secondary school and to highlight and provide material for marketing purposes
Safeguarding and Pastoral Care
* Accept collective responsibility for the safeguarding of all students at ICs, including adherence to the Health and Safety and Safeguarding Policies
* Responsible for the pastoral care of all students in the secondary school
* Responsible for ensuring the secondary facilities are fit for purpose and provide a safe environment for students and staff
* Support direct reports with issues where parents need to be involved, offering advice, attending meetings and taking responsibility for issues that cannot be resolved by the Assistant or Deputy Heads

Membership of the Senior Team
* Accept collective responsibility for all aspects of the whole school, as a member of the ICs senior leadership team
* Demonstrate trust and loyalty to each member of the Senior Leadership Team and to the team itself
* Provide the SLT with regular updates on developments within your area of the school
* Bring forward issues or concerns to SLT for debate, prepare for the meeting by writing a short paper on the issue and possible ways forward
* Prepare for SLT meetings by reading any papers or documents provided in advance of the meeting
* Provide honest and frank contributions to every issue facing the SLT, drawing on your experience as a school leader
* Support the collective decisions made by the SLT in public, explaining decisions and supporting your SLT colleagues
PERSON SPECIFICATIONS (in addition to those expected for Teachers) Qualifications, Training and Experience
* At least three years experience in a significant middle leader role - Essential
* At least two years experience working with IB MYP or IB DP - Essential
* Personal commitment to continuing professional development in the area of leadership - Essential
* Leadership qualification such as NAE SLP, NPQH, a Masters in Educational Leadership or the willingness to obtain such a qualification - Essential
* Experience of working in an international school - Desirable
Skills and competencies
* Articulate, in English, both verbally and in writing - Essential
* Confidence in using basic computer systems and making basic calculations - Essential
* Confident and skilled communicator, whether in front of large crowds, small groups or with individuals - Essential
* Ability to be successful within a team approach - Essential
