Overview
A predoctoral research position is available to join the Colonialism, Gender and Materialities Research Group in the Department of Humanities. This role involves conducting research under the theme \"Gender, Material Culture, and Maintenance Activities in Colonial Situations,\" ultimately leading to the completion of a doctoral thesis.
The research project is part of the European project ERC-2023-AdG Material Culture, Gender and Maintenance Activities in Making and Resisting Early Modern Colonial Globalization. A Long-term Perspective from the Mariana Islands (MaGMa).
Responsibilities
* Investigate Indigenous nationalism, sovereignty, and resistance in the Mariana Islands, analysing how the CHamoru nation has been sustained as a form of resistance under successive imperial regimes.
* Adopt a dual analytical perspective that examines both structural (\"top-down\") and everyday (\"bottom-up\") processes of Indigenous nationhood within a contemporary liberal-democratic colonial framework.
* Analyse political architectures (colonial administration and territorial governance) and cultural institutions (museums, literature, and visual art) as key sites in the production and reproduction of the CHamoru nation.
* Apply a multi-method research design combining archival research (Spanish and U.S. periods), ethnography, archaeology, cultural analysis, and survey-based research.
* Support the group’s social media activities.
* Participate in the group’s archaeological excavations.
The candidate must demonstrate willingness to live and work in Barcelona.
They may also collaborate in teaching activities for up to 180 hours over the total duration of the contract, with a maximum of 60 hours per year, subject to prior approval of the Principal Investigator and provided that such activities are compatible with their research responsibilities.
The candidate will join the research team coordinated by Professor Sandra Montón Subías at Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona, Spain). The research will involve combining data from archives, archaeological collections, and own archaeological excavations to investigate:
Qualifications
* Master’s degree in one of the following fields: Archaeology or History, or in any other branch of the humanities or social sciences.
* Admission or enrollment in the Doctoral Program in History at the time of starting the contract.
* Not having been dismissed through disciplinary proceedings from any public administration service, nor being disqualified by a final judgment from performing public functions. In the case of nationals of another State, not being disqualified or in an equivalent situation nor having been subject to a disciplinary sanction or equivalent that prevents, in their State, access to public employment under the same terms. This requirement must be met on the last day of the application submission deadline.
The requirements must be verifiable at any time during the selection process and must continue to be met at the contract signing date.
Salary
The annual salary for the first year will be approximately €24,276.78 gross.
Selection Criteria
The selection process will consist of an evaluation of each candidate's merits, for which their presence will not be necessary and will be based on the following 21-point rubric:
* Knowledge of the CHamoru world and language: 20 points.
* Advanced level of English: 10 points.
* Experience in science communication: 10 points.
* Experience in social media management: 10 points.
The minimum score required to pass the selection process is 30 points. The selection committee may, if deemed appropriate, invite candidates to an interview or contact referees to clarify aspects of their CV.
