Operations Bioinformatician at the EGA team
The Institute
The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) is an international biomedical research institute of excellence, based in Barcelona, Spain, with more than 400 scientists from 44 countries. The CRG is composed of an interdisciplinary, motivated and creative scientific team which is supported both by flexible and efficient administration and by high-end and innovative technologies.
We are seeking an Operations Bioinformatician;
the position combines helpdesk responsibilities (50%) and bioinformatics responsibilities (50%). On the helpdesk side, the selected candidate will support researchers and institutions throughout the process of data submission and access requests, providing guidance, troubleshooting common issues, and contributing to the improvement of user documentation. On the bioinformatics side, the candidate will perform quality control (QC) on NGS datasets, work with bioinformatics tools, and support data processing pipelines to ensure data integrity and compliance with standards. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the creation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures, promote and enhance the adoption of FAIR principles among EGA users, and collaborate closely with our partners at EMBL-EBI in the UK. The role also involves participation in European-funded projects, with the objective of improving EGA services and features for the international research community.
This hybrid position is ideally suited for a candidate with a background in biology or bioinformatics, who also bring strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in providing user support within a collaborative and international scientific environment.
Responsibilities
Helpdesk (50%)
- Support EGA users with queries, submissions, and access requests
- Troubleshoot user issues and elevate technical problems as needed
- Contribute to FAQs, SOPs, and internal documentation
- Collaborate with the EMBL‑EBI team and other EGA partners
Bioinformatics (50%)
- Perform QC on NGS datasets using established pipelines and tools
- Monitor data submissions for compliance with standards (FAIR principles)
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of SOPs
- Participate in European projects, providing bioinformatics input and operational support
About the EGA
The European Genome‑Phenome Archive (EGA, is a secure service for the permanent archiving and sharing of sensitive genetic, phenotypic, and clinical data resulting from biomedical research projects. It currently hosts more than 16 petabytes of data, including over 3,700 studies and 8,600 datasets. Jointly managed by the Centre for Genomic Regulation ( in Barcelona and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL‑EBI, in Cambridge, the EGA is an active partner in numerous international and national projects and contributes to establishing general standards in genomics and health research. It plays a central role as a core data resource for ELIXIR ( a driver project of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH, and a major contributor to precision medicine initiatives.
The EGA team at the CRG is a diverse group of around 25 professionals, including bioinformaticians, developers, helpdesk officers, and project managers, working across disciplines to advance biomedical data sharing.
Based at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRB B, and supported by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC, and Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF, the EGA provides advanced services to the international research community and continues to grow steadily in both scale and impact.
Qualifications
Professional experience – Must Have
- Master's degree in biology, Bioinformatics, or a related field
- At least 1 year of experience in user support, customer service
- Knowledge of Linux commands and experience with NGS data analysis
- Good computer skills;
familiarity with informatics tools and databases
Nice to have
- Knowledge of human genomic or biomedical data
- Experience with helpdesk/ticketing systems
Languages
- Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken), as it is the language used by the team
- Spanish or Catalan are considered a plus

The Offer – Working Conditions
Contract duration : Technical and scientific activities contract linked to the project duration (estimated duration until 21/10/2026, with the possibility of extension)
Schedule : Full‑time, hybrid model available
Estimated annual gross salary : Salary is commensurate with qualifications and consistent with our pay scales
