Context And Mission
The BSC AI Factory is a large-scale initiative led by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), designed to position Europe at the forefront of general AI development and deployment.
With a multi-stakeholder approach, the AI Factory aims to lower the barriers to AI innovation by offering access to state-of-the-art AI computing infrastructure, advanced training programs, and a dynamic innovation ecosystem.
The initiative supports start-ups, SMEs, corporates, academia, and public institutions, providing tailored support to boost AI capabilities and promote responsible and impactful AI adoption.
In this context, the Life Sciences Department at BSC () is looking for a Research Engineer, with experience in the management of biomedical data for AI applications.
The selected candidate will coordinate a small team of experts in specific areas (NLP applied to medical texts, AI applied to healthcare, AI applied to molecular modelling for drug discovery) who will provide expert support to the BSC AI Factory users in the industrial ecosystem and develop innovative joint projects.
The candidate will closely work with the Innovation department at the BSC and with experts responsible for the overall software and data management strategy in this strategic project.
The BSC is Europe's leading centre for supercomputing research.
The successful candidate will work in a highly sophisticated HPC environment, have access to state-of-the-art systems and computational infrastructures, and establish collaborations with experts and companies in different areas at the local and international levels.
This project is funded by the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility, in accordance with Council Regulation (EU) ********* of 14 December ****, and regulated by Regulation (EU) ******** of the European Parliament and of the Council of 12 February ****, in the context of the "BSC AI Factory" project.
The BSC AI Factory project has received funding from the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No *********.
The JU receives support from the European Union's Horizon Europe Programme and Spain, Portugal, and Türkiye.
Key Duties
Lead a transversal team of experts in AI applied to the biomedical domain (NLP, healthcare, drug discovery) in the context of expert support to BSC AI Factory users and connect to other internal stakeholders involved in the project.
Assist AI Factory users (start-ups, SMEs, corporates, public institutions, and academia) in implementing BSC-created resources, models and data in the biomedical field.
Liaison with external data providers (public administration, hospitals, etc.) to assess the requirements to bring their data into the BSC AI Factory, supported by BSC Legal and data management departments.
Communicate about AI and its applications in the biomedical field, in the context of the BSC AI Factory, in top tier technical forums, as well as in less technical dissemination settings.
Technical English writing of project deliverables.
Requirements
Education
Master's degree in computer science, biomedical sciences, engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics, or related fields.
PhD will be a plus.
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
At least 3 years' experience in technical project management and team coordination tasks.
Demonstrated participation and leadership in international projects, preferably European projects and international collaboration.
Expertise in machine learning / deep learning applied to biomedical or healthcare data.
Strong understanding of at least one type of biomedical data (e.g. medical texts, genomics, proteomics) and the current European regulations in place for their use in AI research and innovation projects.
Strong programming skills (Python, R, etc.).
Ability to design and execute technical presentations and courses on application of AI technologies to real world applications.
Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
Familiarity with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow).
Hands-on experience with transformers, generative AI, agentic AI, medical imaging, NLP, or multimodal AI.
Familiarity with HPC environments or large-scale data infrastructures.
Experience in Industrial R&D; projects involving Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence technologies.
Competences
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Strong personal soft-skills sets: communicative, enthusiastic, highly collaborative, proactive, self-driven, very organised.
Ability to interact with clinical, academic, and industrial partners.
Service-oriented attitude towards external stakeholders with varied degrees of technical expertise.
Fluency in spoken and written English (required), Spanish and Catalan, as well as in other European languages will also be highly valued.
Conditions
The position will be located at BSC within the Life Sciences Department.
Full-time contract (37.5h/week), flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures.
Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration.
Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement.
Competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona.

Selection consists of two phases: Curriculum analysis (40 % points) and interview phase (60 % points).
