Scopely is looking for a Technical Director focused on server technologies to join our team for a new, truly unique multiplayer strategy game. The position can be based in any of our locations including Ireland, UK, Spain, Portugal, and Israel on a hybrid or remote basis. We offer visa sponsorship and relocation assistance. We are currently in the early stages of development for an ambitious, unannounced Strategy/MMO title. We are seeking talented and passionate game makers to join us on this exciting journey!
What You Will Do
1. Report to the VP of Technology.
2. Set the technical standard within the studio and develop the development team's skill set to align with game design objectives.
3. Have a strong knowledge of various game technologies with a focus on server technology.
4. Understand server technology, middleware, and their constraints in the main areas of a game: client, server, and infrastructure.
5. Strategically plan the future evolution of server technology in collaboration with product, design, and other stakeholders.
6. Manage the development cycle with Engineering Leads, identify engineering tasks and processes needed to execute on the roadmap.
7. Ensure games are built using productive methodologies and solid coding practices, including technical briefs and code reviews, with long-term quality in mind.
8. Identify technical risks on projects and develop contingency plans with the team.
9. Maintain positive working relationships with technology teams within Scopely to enhance the use of shared technologies.
10. Encourage a pleasant team atmosphere through regular internal communications.
11. Facilitate communication within and across disciplines.
12. Demonstrate good leadership, charisma, enthusiasm, and commitment.
13. Manage the performance, growth, and nurture the engineering team, including recruitment, on-boarding, development, and professional training.
14. Ensure Lead Engineers define clear objectives for team members and direct reports.
15. Propose solutions to improve project development in the studio.
16. Promote the application of technical best practices.
17. Encourage the sharing of technical knowledge and code between projects.
What We’re Looking For
5+ years of leadership experience in the games industry and preferably 2+ years in a similar role. Experience in developing highly available back-end systems and servers for large-scale MMO games, high-traffic web systems, or applications. Proficiency in Python and its ecosystem, familiarity with web frameworks such as Flask, Tornado, FastAPI, or similar, Python threading, and async programming principles. Knowledge of RESTful API design and development. A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent. Exceptional people management and communication skills. Good knowledge of programming languages and software engineering practices. Expertise in relevant server and infrastructure technologies for gaming. Experience with stateful and stateless game server architectures.
Bonus Points:
* Familiarity with messaging systems like RabbitMQ, AWS SQS, Redis Streams.
* Experience working with AWS services such as EC2, ECR, RDS, S3, and IAM.
* Knowledge of Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and experience with Terraform for managing infrastructure deployment.
* Understanding of network infrastructure and cloud networking concepts like VPC, Subnet, Security Groups, and Load Balancing.
* Experience with traffic analysis via Charles proxy, browser developer tools, Datadog, logs.
* Understanding Kibana / Datadog log querying and dashboards.
