Principal Software Engineer (Individual Contributor)

The Company
UK-based fintech platform backed by major retail brands, operating in the Buy Now Pay Later / pay-later space (Klarna-style alternative). The platform is scaling and investing in strengthening its microservices architecture and cloud infrastructure.
The Role
We are seeking a Principal-level Individual Contributor Engineer to lead complex technical delivery across Node.js microservices and AWS cloud infrastructure.
This is a hands-on technical role with no line management responsibilities. You will operate at Principal level in terms of ownership, architectural input, and production impact, while remaining embedded in the code.
You will contribute to system design, deployment reliability, and long-term platform sustainability, working closely with product, platform, QA, and delivery teams.
Key Responsibilities
* Design and build scalable API-driven microservices (Node.js / TypeScript)
* Lead complex technical design decisions and architectural trade-offs
* Contribute to and uphold engineering standards and best practices
* Own code quality, testing strategy, and CI/CD processes
* Support and coordinate production deployments
* Provide third-line support and complex incident resolution
* Contribute to technical roadmap and platform improvements
* Ensure secure coding practices and regulatory compliance
* RESTful APIs (JSON)
* AWS (Lambda, EC2, ECS/Fargate, RDS)
* Docker / containerisation
* Terraform (Infrastructure as Code)
* Git / GitLab
* Monitoring tools (Grafana, Kibana)
Experience Required
* Strong experience building and designing microservices in Node.js / TypeScript
* CI/CD and DevOps exposure (build, test, deploy pipelines)
* Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred)
* Strong understanding of API design and scalable distributed systems
* Comfortable operating at Principal IC level without direct people management
