Responsibilities
We are looking for an Underwriter to join our Life Sciences team in Spain. This role focuses on underwriting complex and high‑value risks in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical devices, and clinical trials sectors, ensuring profitable growth while complying with internal guidelines and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning & Business Development
* Co‑develop market plans with the Manager Life Science; own segment initiatives and deliver against growth & profit targets.
* Identify attractive niches within Life Sciences, broker/client opportunities and (alternative) distribution channels; shape go‑to‑market plays and business cases.
Risk Assessment & Underwriting
* Analyze submissions for Life Sciences accounts (medical devices, biotech, pharma, CROs).
* Apply Berkley underwriting guidelines and risk analysis methodology.
* Assess regulatory compliance (FDA, EMA, IVDR, GCP) and company practices.
Portfolio Management
* Handle renewals and develop new business opportunities.
* Manage portfolio health (mix, limits, aggregates, rate adequacy) and maintain a disciplined pipeline.
* Ensure underwriting decisions align with risk appetite and authority limits.
* Maintain accurate records in BEITS and comply with peer review (“four‑eyes principle”).
Broker & Client Relations
* Build strong relationships with brokers and clients.
* Negotiate coverage, terms, and pricing for primary and excess placements.
* Conduct client visits and participate in commercial initiatives.
Team Leadership & Talent Development
* Partner cross‑functionally with Claims, Operations, Finance, HR and other underwriting teams to deliver seamless client experience.
* Share best practices, informally mentor less‑experienced colleagues, and actively foster a culture of learning and growth.
General
* Read, understand and sign personal authority letter and any other technical guideline provided, and act within the limits of its scope.
Innovation
* Engage in innovation initiatives, product launches, marketing campaigns and short‑term projects as appropriate to contribute positively toward the success of the overall team and company.
* Pilot new products/features, test digital tools, automate workflows and use data‑driven insights.
* Establish feedback loops with brokers/clients to iterate quickly and improve outcomes.
Sales & Distribution
* Develop and grow a knowledgeable producer population, incl. strategic and tactical broker/producer development planning.
* Build strong relationships with brokers to ensure the practice meets or exceeds financial goals including growth, profit, retention, and new business.
Compliance & Risk Management
* Stay current with all compliance, procedural, and workflow changes; ensure all activities comply with applicable laws and regulations.
Reporting
* Reports to Manager of Line of Business; aligns and collaborates with the Head of Specialties Europe as needed.
Regular exchange with US and other country Life Science teams to share insights and align on best practices.
Experience. Skills & Competencies
* Experience in underwriting for Life Sciences (pharma, biotech, medical devices, or clinical trials).
* Diverse profiles are valued, including career changers from other underwriting lines with genuine curiosity for Life Science; drive, curiosity, and a strong learning mindset are considered more important than a strictly linear CV.
* Underwriting experience beyond entry level (no fixed years), ideally oriented toward smart solutions (pragmatic, data‑enabled and efficient approaches); risk‑assessment expertise expected, exposure to Life Science lines is an advantage.
* Entrepreneurial, outcome‑oriented approach with a bias for action; comfortable taking ownership of decisions.
* Strong communication skills (Spanish & English), stakeholder management, and negotiation capabilities.
* Digital fluency (Microsoft 365, data handling, new tools) and a continuous‑improvement mindset.
* Reliability, integrity, and resilience in a collaborative team environment.
* Ability to manage time, meet deadlines and prioritize.
* Proactivity & Team Working.
* Calm under pressure; excellent organizational skills, integrity, and follow‑through.
* Proven track record of building and maintaining strong business relationships.
