Learning how to cook a paella has become a favourite tourist activity in Barcelona over the years, but this private class goes one step further to create a truly memorable meal and workshop.

Not only does your host (a qualified sommelier and graduate of the Michelin-starred Hofmann culinary school) teach you the sacred skill of cooking a delicious paella, but she also instructs you on the secret technique Napoleonic soldiers once used to ostentatiously (but safely!) open a bottle of Champagne with their swords.

The paella dish hardly needs introducing, and more than a few travellers arrive in Spain every year for the simple joy of tucking into this exquisite rice dish. It’s a little tricky to get exactly right, but in the kitchen of this beautiful bodega you’ll learn the keys to producing a plate as fine as you’ll find in any restaurant, with succulent mussels, squid and prawns lending their flavour to the Valencian-style rice (cultivated to soak up as much sabor as possible! Note: vegetarian version also available).

And in between chopping, simmering and seasoning you’ll be taught how deftly to remove the corked top of a bottle of Cava (Catalan Champagne) using a curved sabre. Needless to say safety tips are given, but it’s surprisingly easy and – when done right – creates a smooth cut, meaning you can pour out the bottle’s contents and drink it after!

You even get a certificate to prove you’re now a competent sabre-wielder!

Overall a fantastic and original activity with an engaging host, which is perfect for couples or small groups of friends or colleagues (up to 15 people can fit in the kitchen!).

Reservations

The cost of the private class is €119 euros per person for groups of 2 to 3, and €99 per person for groups of 4 to 15 people.

Typically, the event is run on Friday and Saturday lunchtimes, but the host is flexible on times. Just email us at with your travel dates and we’ll help get you booked in.

For larger groups of 15+ people, the event can be staged in a beautiful patio garden, with a supplementary cost of around 20%. Get in touch for a quote.
